An asscher cut moissanite held in four split claws on a completely plain rounded band, with a hidden halo of small stones set around the basket beneath the centre. There are no stones on the band whatsoever. From above it is a plain solitaire. From the side it is not.

We make it to order in our workshop in Surat, India. Family run, every ring finished and checked by hand.

The purest version of a hidden halo

We make several rings with a hidden halo, and on all the others it accompanies something else: a paved band, a twisted shank, stones set into a bezel rim. This one has nothing else at all.

That makes it the clearest expression of the idea. A hidden halo is a detail meant for the wearer and for close quarters rather than for photographs, and on a ring with no other decoration there is nothing to distract from it. You look down and see a clean solitaire on a plain band. Someone across a table sees a line of light under the stone that you cannot see from where you are sitting.

It is also, by a clear margin, the least expensive way into a hidden halo in our range, because there is no other stone setting labour in the ring.

What a hidden halo actually does

Beyond the visual, it solves a real problem with step cuts. An asscher sits fairly high in its setting, and the space beneath the stone reads as a dark void from the side, particularly in a plain setting with nothing to fill it.

A ring of small stones facing outward fills that space with light. The stone appears to be lifted on something bright rather than perched over a gap. On a plain band ring, where there is nothing else happening in the profile, this is the difference between a setting that looks finished and one that looks bare.

The split claws

Each of the four claws divides into two as it reaches the stone, gripping either side of a cropped corner rather than covering it. The corner of the stone shows between them.

That is a deliberate choice on a step cut. A solid claw over a corner hides the very feature that identifies an asscher, since the cropped corners are what make the octagon read as a square. A split claw holds just as securely while leaving the geometry visible.

The stone

An asscher is a square step cut with cropped corners, so its outline is an octagon that reads as a square. The facets are cut in concentric squares that draw the eye down into the stone, an effect jewellers call the hall of mirrors. It flashes in broad clean blocks rather than sparkling.

With a plain band and no accents beyond the hidden halo, the centre carries this ring almost entirely. Every centre stone is Colorless in body colour and VVS in clarity, and the hidden halo stones are Colorless and VVS too.

Moissanite has a higher refractive index than diamond, which in a step cut shows as depth rather than fire, and at 9.25 on the Mohs scale it stands up to daily wear.

Choose the centre from 2 carat up to 5 carat. Nothing on this ring competes with the stone, so it carries a large centre as well as anything we make.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. Shown in yellow gold, where the warm plain band contrasts cleanly with the white hidden halo and the stones underneath read very clearly in profile. White gold is quieter and more uniform, and the hidden halo becomes a subtler effect. Rose gold is soft and unusual. Silver is the most affordable route and, with so little setting labour, gives you a genuinely good ring for very little. 10K is the hardest, 14K is the everyday balance, 18K is the richest but softest. White gold is rhodium plated and needs replating every one to two years.

Made to order

Nothing is taken off a shelf. We form the band and the split claws, set the hidden halo around the basket, set the centre, then file and polish for your metal, centre size and finger size after your order arrives. A hidden halo is set on a curved surface facing outward, which you cannot see while working on the top of the ring, so it takes longer than its size suggests. On a plain band the polish is the entire finish. That is how we offer twenty one ring sizes and forty combinations.

Care

Warm water, a drop of mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush. Concentrate underneath the stone, because the hidden halo sits exactly where hand cream and soap collect, and it is the only decoration on the ring. A dull hidden halo makes this a plain band solitaire. Rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming pools, and keep it away from bleach.

Also in this family

Other designs with a hidden halo we make, so you can see the whole choice in one place:

  • Twisted Vine Hidden Halo, one strand paved and one plain, shoulder length, with a hidden halo
  • Pave Bezel, stones set into the bezel rim wall itself, plus a hidden halo
  • Fine Pave Hidden Halo, half coverage scalloped pave on an ultra fine band with a hidden halo, the lightest and easiest to resize
  • Full Eternity Pave, pave the whole way round plus a hidden halo, the most sparkle but barely resizable
  • Three Quarter Pave, pave around three quarters of the band with a hidden halo collar, the middle option

We would rather point you to a different ring of ours than sell you the wrong one. If none of these is quite right, tell us what you are after and we will say so plainly.

Questions we are asked

Will a wedding band sit flush? Yes, very well. A plain rounded band with no stones is among the easiest profiles to sit a second ring against.

Can it be resized? Yes, easily. No stones in the shank at all. This is one of the simplest rings we make to resize.

Is a hidden halo worth paying for if it cannot be seen from above? A fair question, and the answer depends on you. It is a detail for the wearer, not a display feature. If you want visible impact for the money, our Pave Halo ring gives far more of it. If you like the idea of a plain ring that turns out not to be plain, this is exactly that and it is the cheapest way we offer it.

Will inclusions show in a step cut? Not at VVS. That grade is what makes a step cut worth doing, and on a ring this plain the stone is doing all the work.
