An asscher cut moissanite held in a full bezel, with a halo of micropave set outside the bezel rim and following the octagonal outline exactly, on a plain polished split shank. It is the only ring we make in this shape that combines a bezel with a halo.

We make it to order in our workshop in Surat, India. Family run, every ring finished and checked by hand.

Two frames rather than one

Most halo rings hold the centre in claws, so the halo is the only thing framing the stone and the eye reads one enlarged bright shape.

Here there are two frames. A solid rim of metal encloses the stone, and a ring of small stones sits outside that rim. Between them runs a clean line of polished metal.

The effect is that centre and halo stay legible as separate things. You see a square stone, a metal border, then a sparkling border. It is more architectural and more deliberate than a claw set halo, where the two tend to merge into a single mass.

The tradeoff, stated plainly, is that this arrangement does less to make the centre look bigger. A tight pave halo touching a claw set stone borrows the stone's outline and extends it. A bezel between them interrupts that. If maximum apparent size is your goal, our Pave Halo ring does that job better and we would rather tell you than sell you the wrong thing. What you get here instead is clarity and a much more secure setting.

How this compares with our other halo and bezel asscher rings

Among the halos: the Pave Halo ring is claw set with a plain band, delicate, and maximises apparent size. The Cluster Halo ring uses large individually claw set stones and is the heaviest. The Lotus Petal Halo makes the outline a flower rather than a square.

Among the bezels: the Double Rail Eternity ring is a bezel with a wide paved band and no halo. The Milgrain Bezel is a beaded rim, no halo. The Smooth Bezel is the plain minimal one.

This is where the two families meet, and it is the only place they do.

Why a bezel suits a step cut

Claws sit on the straight edges of a square stone and interrupt the lines that make the shape read as square. A bezel repeats the outline instead, tracing every straight side and every cropped corner, so the setting agrees with the stone.

It is also the most secure setting there is. The corners of a square cut are its weak point, and here they are covered by metal. Nothing catches, nothing bends.

The stone

An asscher is a square step cut with cropped corners, so its outline is an octagon that reads as a square. The facets are cut in concentric squares that draw the eye down into the stone, an effect jewellers call the hall of mirrors. It flashes in broad blocks rather than sparkling, which is why the halo works: the small brilliants supply the movement the centre deliberately lacks.

Every centre stone is Colorless in body colour and VVS in clarity, and every halo stone is Colorless and VVS too.

Moissanite has a higher refractive index than diamond, which in a step cut shows as depth rather than fire, and at 9.25 on the Mohs scale it stands up to daily wear.

Choose the centre from 2 carat up to 5 carat. The bezel covers the outer edge of the stone, so a bezel set asscher looks slightly smaller than the same stone in claws, and the halo does not fully compensate. If you are choosing between sizes, take the larger.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. Shown in yellow gold, which is the version that makes the design's logic clearest, because the gold bezel rim draws a distinct warm line between the white centre and the white halo. That separation is the whole idea. In white gold the rim becomes nearly invisible and the ring reads much more like a conventional halo, which is handsome but rather defeats the point. Rose gold does what yellow does, more softly. Silver is the most affordable route. 10K is the hardest, 14K is the everyday balance, 18K is the richest but softest. White gold is rhodium plated and needs replating every one to two years.

Made to order

Nothing is taken off a shelf. We build the halo, set each accent, close the bezel to your stone, then file and polish for your metal, centre size and finger size after your order arrives. Getting a bezel to sit true on an eight sided stone is harder than on a round one, because every straight run and every cropped corner has to meet cleanly. That is how we offer twenty one ring sizes and forty combinations.

Care

Warm water, a drop of mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush. Clean the channel between the bezel rim and the halo, which is a narrow trap for hand cream, and clean under the centre, since a step cut shows anything sitting below it. Rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming pools, and keep it away from bleach.

Also in this family

Other bezel designs we make, so you can see the whole choice in one place:

  • Pave Bezel, stones set into the bezel rim wall itself, plus a hidden halo
  • High Set Bezel, a plain bezel lifted on a rounded open arch, the most architectural

We would rather point you to a different ring of ours than sell you the wrong one. If none of these is quite right, tell us what you are after and we will say so plainly.

Questions we are asked

Will a wedding band sit flush? Reasonably well. The halo sits above the shank and the split band is plain, so a straight band meets it without a large gap, though a contoured band is neater.

Can it be resized? Yes, comfortably. No stones in the shank at all.

Is a bezel plus a halo too much metal around the stone? It is more than a claw setting, certainly. On a 2 carat centre the framing is quite prominent. From 3 carat upward the proportions settle and the centre clearly leads.

Will inclusions show in a step cut? Not at VVS. That grade is what makes a step cut worth doing.
