Bars instead of claws

The asscher is gripped along two opposite edges by flat bars of metal rather than by four claws at the corners. Nothing sits on top of the stone, so the table stays completely open, and the two bars line up with the straight edges of the cut instead of interrupting them. It is a cleaner solution than claws on a square stone, and a stronger one.

Trillions that point inward

Each side stone is a triangle set with its point towards the centre and its long edge against the band. That direction matters: turned the other way the ring would look wider than the finger, whereas this way the eye runs inward to the asscher.

The asscher cut

A step cut square with cropped corners and deep parallel facets that draw the eye down into the stone, the effect often called a hall of mirrors. There is no brilliant faceting to hide behind, which is why we set only E colour, VVS2 stones in this design.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. All three golds are photographed here. Yellow gold makes the bars read strongly against the stone; white gold lets them disappear and the three diamonds run together. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown. The two trillions are matched to the same E and VVS2 grade.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. The bars are cut and fitted to the measured stone so the asscher sits square between them, and the trillions are set level with it rather than dropped below. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush, brushing under the centre stone between the two bars. There is very little for anything to collect in on this setting. The points of a trillion are its weak spots, so avoid knocks. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity are the diamonds? The centre asscher and both trillions are E colour and VVS2 clarity, on every metal and every carat weight. On step cuts you see straight into the stone, so this matters more than usual.

Does the carat weight include the side stones? No. The 2, 3, 4 and 5 carat options refer to the centre asscher. The trillions are in addition and are scaled to suit it.

Is the certificate really free? Yes. The IGI report for the centre stone is included in the price on every variant.

Is a bar setting secure? Yes, and on a square stone it is more secure than corner claws, since the metal runs the full length of two edges rather than gripping four points.

Will a wedding band sit flush? Yes. The band is flat and straight, and the stones sit above it, so a straight band meets it cleanly.

Can it be resized? Yes, at the back. One or two sizes either way is straightforward.
