An asscher cut laboratory grown diamond, square with cropped corners and a deep hall of mirrors pattern, held in four pairs of slender claws on a slim, plain band. The double claws protect every corner of the stone and frame its geometric outline, and the plain band keeps the look clean and architectural.

Why the asscher

The asscher cut was created in Amsterdam in 1902 and became a signature of the Art Deco era. It is a square step cut with deeply cropped corners, which gives it an octagonal outline and, looking down into the stone, a pattern of concentric squares often called a hall of mirrors. Instead of sparkle it shows broad, clean flashes of light. Because a step cut shows everything, a high clarity grade matters, and every centre stone we use is VVS2.

Why double claws

Each cropped corner of the asscher is held by a pair of claws, so the stone is gripped at eight points and its corners are fully protected. The paired claws also echo the geometry of the cut.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. Yellow gold gives the asscher a warm vintage glow; white gold emphasises its icy Art Deco lines. 10K is the hardest alloy, 14K is the everyday balance, and 18K is the richest colour but the softest metal. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. The eight claws are shaped by hand to fit your asscher's corners exactly. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush. A clean step cut shows its hall of mirrors best, so brush under the stone regularly. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity is the diamond? Every centre stone is E colour and VVS2 clarity, on every metal and every carat weight.

Does an asscher look smaller than a round? It can look slightly smaller face up for the same weight because it is cut deeper, but its outline is bold and distinctive.

Asscher or emerald cut? Both are step cuts; the asscher is square and the emerald rectangular.

Will a wedding band sit flush? Yes. A straight band sits neatly beneath the head.

Can it be resized? Yes. A plain band is the easiest style to resize.
