A bezel cut to the stone

An asscher has eight sides, not four. A bezel made properly for one has to be built as an octagon, with each corner mitred, or the metal bunches at the angles. Ours is formed around the measured stone, which is why the rim stays the same width the whole way round in the close photographs.

Raised, not sunk

The bezel sits on a post above the band rather than down on it. That leaves a visible gap under the stone, lets light in from the sides, and lifts the diamond high enough that a wedding band can sit flush against the shank without touching it.

The asscher cut

A step cut square with cropped corners and deep parallel facets that draw the eye down into the stone, the effect often described as a hall of mirrors. There is no brilliant faceting to disguise anything, so colour and clarity do the work. Ours are E colour and VVS2, which is why they stay clean and bright in a cut this open.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. All three golds are photographed here. A warm bezel around a step cut gives a strong outline; a white bezel lets the stone run to its own edge. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown. The pave diamonds are matched to the same E and VVS2 grade.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. The octagonal bezel is formed and mitred by hand, the post is soldered so the stone sits level from every angle, and the band is pave set last. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush, brushing under the bezel where it meets the post and along the pave. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity is the diamond? Every centre stone is E colour and VVS2 clarity, on every metal and every carat weight. It matters more on a step cut than on any brilliant.

Does the carat weight include the pave? No. The 2, 3, 4 and 5 carat options refer to the centre asscher cut. The band diamonds are in addition.

Is the certificate really free? Yes. The IGI report is included in the price on every variant.

Will a wedding band sit flush? Yes. The stone is raised clear of the shank, so a straight band meets the ring cleanly.

Can it be resized? Yes, at the back, where the band is plain. One or two sizes either way is straightforward.

Is a bezel safer than claws for an asscher? Yes. The cropped corners are the weak points on a step cut, and a bezel covers them completely.
