An antique cut in a modern setting

The stone is cut the old way, with fewer and larger facets, a higher crown and an open centre, so it flashes broadly instead of glittering. The bezel around it is completely plain. That combination is deliberate: an antique cut in an antique setting can look like costume, while an antique cut held in a clean band of gold looks like something considered.

Shoulders that step, not sparkle

Two accents on each side, the larger nearer the bezel, set low into the tapering metal. They bridge the gap between a wide bezel and a narrow band so the ring does not appear to stop abruptly at the setting. There is no pave and no continuous line of stones.

Why bezel a large cushion

A bezel wraps the girdle completely, which protects the widest part of the stone, keeps the profile low, and stops the ring catching. On a cushion, whose rounded corners are awkward to claw properly, it is also the neatest solution: the metal follows the curve all the way round instead of gripping four points.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. This ring was photographed in yellow gold, which suits an antique cut, but every metal is made to order and priced above. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown. The shoulder accents are matched to the same E and VVS2 grade.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. The bezel is formed around the measured stone so the rim stays even along the long sides and around the rounded corners, and the shoulder accents are set after the head is joined to the band. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

About the photographs

One of the photographs on the hand shows this ring worn with a curved band. That band is a separate piece and is not included.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush, brushing under the bezel and across the shoulder accents. A bezel keeps the front of the stone cleaner than claws, but the underside still collects. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity are the diamonds? The centre cushion and every accent are E colour and VVS2 clarity, on all metals and all carat weights.

Does the carat weight include the shoulder stones? No. The 2, 3, 4 and 5 carat options refer to the centre cushion. The accents are in addition.

Is the certificate really free? Yes. The IGI report for the centre stone is included in the price on every variant.

Does a bezel make the stone look smaller? The rim covers the extreme edge of the girdle, so very slightly. In exchange you get a stone that is far harder to damage and a ring that sits low enough to wear daily.

Will a wedding band sit flush? Yes, closely. A bezel with tapered shoulders is one of the easier shapes to pair with a straight band.

Can it be resized? Yes, at the back where the band is plain. One or two sizes either way is straightforward.
