How it’s made

Can a Lab Diamond Be Grown to Order?

β€˜We’ll grow a diamond just for you’ is one of 2026’s more romantic marketing lines. The truth is more useful: one part of the process can genuinely be made to your specification, and it isn’t the growing.

Written by the Mapple Gems workshop, Surat Β· Updated 10 October 2026

Short answer

Rarely in the literal sense. Lab diamonds are grown in batches to standard sizes, and a grower does not usually start a single crystal for one customer. What can genuinely be made to order is the cut: a cutter can choose rough and shape it to a specific outline, length-to-width ratio or proportion. For most buyers, the stone they want already exists among graded stones and simply needs to be found.

As lab grown diamonds have become ordinary, brands have looked for ways to make them feel personal again. β€˜Custom grown’ is one of them. It is not always wrong, but it often describes something other than what a buyer imagines, so it is worth knowing how a lab diamond is actually produced before paying extra for the idea.

How a lab diamond is really made

There are two growth methods. CVD (chemical vapour deposition) builds diamond layer by layer from a carbon-rich gas onto thin seed plates, and a reactor typically runs many seeds at once over several weeks. HPHT (high pressure, high temperature) recreates the conditions deep in the earth inside a press, and also produces rough in runs. Either way the output is rough crystal of various sizes, grown to suit what sells, not to an individual order.

That rough is then planned, sawn, shaped and polished, often losing well over half its weight on the way. Only after polishing is the stone sent to a laboratory such as IGI for grading.

Stage Can it be made to your order? What that looks like
Growth Rarely Batches to standard sizes; very large or coloured runs can be planned, not usually for one buyer
Cutting Yes Rough chosen and cut to your shape, ratio, depth or an unusual outline
Selection Yes, and fastest Searching existing graded stones for your exact measurements
Setting Yes The ring built around the stone you chose

When a custom cut is worth it

A custom cut earns its time when you want something the market does not stock: a very long, slim pear, a particular ratio of elongated cushion, an old-style cut, or a matched pair of unusual shapes. It adds weeks rather than days, and the result is graded only after cutting, so the final colour and clarity are confirmed at the end, not promised at the start.

For round, oval, emerald, radiant and the other standard shapes in normal ratios, a custom cut is almost never needed. The range of graded stones already on the market is enormous, and the right one can be found by measurement.

From the workshop

Our workshop is in Surat, the city where most of the world’s diamonds are cut and polished, so we see this from close range. Cutting to a requested shape or ratio is genuine and something cutters here do every day. Growing a stone from scratch for one ring is not how the industry works, and a seller who claims it should be able to tell you which grower, which run and how long. In practice, when a customer sends us a specification, we search graded stones first, and only go to a custom cut if nothing matches.

Questions to ask about a β€˜custom grown’ offer

  1. Which part is custom: the growing, the cutting, or the selection?
  2. Is the colour and clarity guaranteed in advance, or confirmed after grading?
  3. Which laboratory will grade it, and will I see the report before the stone is set?
  4. How long does each stage take, and what happens if the stone grades lower than planned?
  5. What would the same specification cost as an existing graded stone?

A clear answer to the last question tells you exactly what the word β€˜custom’ is costing.

Frequently asked questions

Can you custom grow a lab diamond?

Rarely for a single buyer. Lab diamonds are grown in batches to standard sizes. What can be made to order is the cutting: a cutter can shape rough to your requested outline, ratio or proportions.

How long does it take to grow a lab diamond?

CVD growth typically takes several weeks per batch; HPHT runs are shorter. Cutting, polishing and grading add more time, which is why most rings use stones that have already been graded.

Can I get a lab diamond cut to a specific shape or ratio?

Yes. Custom cutting is common for unusual ratios, elongated shapes and matched pairs. Final colour and clarity are confirmed by the laboratory after cutting.

Is a custom cut lab diamond worth the extra cost?

Only if you want something not available among existing graded stones. For standard shapes in normal ratios, selecting a graded stone by measurement gives the same result faster.
