When Valentine's and Your Anniversary Are Close Together

Two occasions three weeks apart is not two gifts. It's one budget, split badly.

Plenty of couples got together in the run-up to Valentine's, or married in the winter, and end up with two gift occasions inside a month. The default response is to buy two mid-priced things, and the usual result is two mid-priced things.

The arithmetic is worth facing directly. Two gifts at half the budget each are not equivalent to one at full budget โ€” in jewelry, doubling a budget buys considerably more than double the piece, because you cross thresholds into better stones, solid metal and more substantial construction.

Four ways to handle it

Approach Works when
One big, one small The anniversary matters more to both of you
A pair of pieces A bracelet in February, its partner in March
Alternate years You're both relaxed about it and say so
Merge into one Milestone years โ€” fifth, tenth, twenty-fifth

The paired approach is the most underrated. A bracelet given in February and a second designed to stack beside it three weeks later reads as one thought carried across two occasions โ€” which is more romantic than two unrelated objects, not less.

Which occasion should carry the weight

If you are going to make one the bigger event, make it the anniversary. It is specific to the two of you, the date means something, and it is the one that scales as the years pass โ€” the tenth genuinely is a bigger occasion than the ninth. Valentine's is the same size every year.

The exception is a relationship still in its early stretch, where the anniversary might only be the first or second. There, Valentine's often carries more weight simply because the anniversary has not accumulated any yet. Anniversary Gifts by Year covers how the sequencing works over a marriage.

Say which one you're doing

This is the part people skip, and it is the part that actually matters. Almost all the friction here comes from mismatched expectations, not from the size of the gift.

"I'm saving it for our anniversary" said in early February costs nothing and removes the entire problem. Deciding silently to make Valentine's the small one, and hoping it reads as strategy rather than indifference, does not.

Planning around the dates

One practical trap: if both occasions fall in the same month and you are ordering made-to-order jewelry, you need the runway for the first one, not the second. That usually means ordering in December or early January.

February is also the busiest period of the year for jewelry, which is the worst month to discover you have left it late. Ordering Jewelry for a Fixed Date covers counting backwards properly.

FAQs

Should I buy two gifts if Valentine's and our anniversary are close?

Usually not two equal ones. Splitting a budget in half buys much less than half as much jewelry twice, because you fall short of the thresholds where stones and construction improve.

Which occasion should get the bigger gift?

The anniversary, in most cases โ€” it is specific to you both and grows in significance each year. Early in a relationship, Valentine's may still carry more.

Is it acceptable to combine them into one gift?

Yes, particularly for milestone anniversaries โ€” as long as you say so beforehand rather than leaving it to be inferred.

When should I order if both dates fall in February?

Count backwards from the earlier date, not the later one. For made-to-order pieces that generally means ordering in December or early January.
