At a funeral, jewelry should be quiet and respectful — present, but never the focus. A few simple guidelines make the choice easy on a difficult day.

Short answer

For a funeral, keep jewelry minimal and understated: small studs or pearls, a simple necklace, and your everyday rings such as a wedding band. Avoid large, flashy or noisy pieces. A piece that belonged to or reminds you of the person who has died can be a meaningful, quiet tribute. Customs vary by culture and faith, so follow any guidance from the family.

Nobody expects you to think hard about jewelry when you're grieving. The simplest approach is to wear less, choose quieter pieces, and let the day be about the person being remembered.

Some of the most meaningful requests we receive come after a loss — a pendant engraved with a date, or a ring remade from a grandmother's stone. On the day of a funeral itself, though, the kindest choice is usually something you already own and that connects you to the person: a piece they gave you, or something of theirs. A note on customs
