Short answer
An open shank ring has a band that stops short at the top, leaving a gap between two ends that are often set with stones. It looks airy, modern and minimal. It still needs to be made to your size โ an open ring shouldn't be squeezed or stretched to fit, because repeated bending weakens the metal. Check the stones at each end are well protected, since the ends are exposed.
Open shank designs include toi et moi rings with two facing stones, rings ending in two kites or pears, and minimalist bands with simple finished ends. The gap is part of the design โ it frames the skin between.

People often assume an open ring is adjustable. Fine jewelry open shanks are not meant to be squeezed or pulled open to change size: gold hardens each time it's bent, and after a few adjustments the metal can crack near the stones. So we make open shank rings to your size, just like closed rings, and the gap stays a design feature. The stones at the ends also sit on the most exposed part of the ring, so they need secure claws or bezels โ check them now and then, especially if you use your hands a lot.
