Kite Cut Stones: Sharp, Modern and Surprisingly Versatile

A kite cut is a four-sided stone with two long sides and two short ones โ€” shaped like a child's kite. It turns up in open rings, side accents and geometric earrings.

Short answer

Kite cut stones have four sides, with two adjacent long sides and two short ones, giving a pointed, directional shape. They're used as the ends of open rings, as accents beside a centre stone, and in geometric earrings. They look modern and graphic. Their points need protecting, and pairs must be mirrored so they point the right way.

Kites belong to the family of "fancy" geometric cuts that designers use when they want a ring to feel contemporary. Their pointed tip gives a sense of direction, so they're often placed to point toward or away from the centre of a design.

Where kites are used

Use Look
Open ring ends Two kites facing each other across a gap
Side accents Pointing toward the centre stone
Earrings Geometric drops and studs
Centre stone Unusual, bold solitaire

A kite is asymmetric in one direction, so a pair has to be cut as true mirror images โ€” one kite for the left, one for the right. Two identical kites set either side of a ring would point the same way and look wrong immediately. The long point is also the stone's weakest spot, so we set it under a claw or into a bezel tip. On an open ring, where each kite sits at a free end of the band, that protection matters even more, because the ends are exposed to knocks.
