Which Alternative Survives Daily Wear

The Mohs scale is not linear and it does not measure what most people think it measures. Two corrections change the whole ranking.

Short answer

For a ring worn every day, only lab grown diamond (Mohs 10) and moissanite (9.25) hold up indefinitely. White sapphire at 9 is acceptable but dulls. Cubic zirconia at 8.25โ€“8.5 and white topaz at 8 both lose their polish within a few years, because ordinary household dust contains quartz at Mohs 7 and abrades anything close to its own hardness.

Every guide to diamond alternatives publishes a Mohs number and moves on. The number is real, but read on its own it produces the wrong conclusion twice over.

Correction one: the scale is not linear

Mohs is an ordinal scale. It ranks materials by which scratches which, and the gaps between the numbers are wildly unequal. Nine to ten is not one step; in absolute terms it is a very large jump, far larger than seven to eight.

So 8.5 versus 9.25 reads like a small difference and is not. Written as a list of numbers, cubic zirconia looks nearly as hard as moissanite. In use it is not remotely close.

Correction two: it is dust, not diamonds

People imagine a stone gets scratched by hitting something dramatic. It does not. It gets scratched by the ordinary world, and the ordinary world is full of quartz.

Household dust contains quartz particles, and quartz sits at Mohs 7. Every time you wipe a surface, brush past a doorframe, or simply wear a ring through a normal day, that stone is meeting Mohs 7 repeatedly.

A material has to sit comfortably above 7 to shrug that off. At 8 or 8.5 it does not โ€” the facet edges round off first, then the polish goes flat, and the stone reads dull. That is the whole mechanism behind "my cubic zirconia went cloudy". Nothing clouded. The surface was abraded.

The ranking that matters

That last row is the one nobody expects. Gold sits at roughly Mohs 2.8 โ€” far below household quartz. Whatever stone you choose, the metal is going to mark. That is not a fault and it is not avoidable; it is what gold does.

Hardness is not toughness

These are separate properties and confusing them causes real disappointment.

Hardness is resistance to scratching. Toughness is resistance to chipping and breaking under impact. A material can be very hard and still chip.

Diamond is the extreme case: Mohs 10, the hardest natural material, and it has cleavage planes โ€” directions along which the crystal will split cleanly under the right knock. Moissanite has none, which is one genuine structural advantage it holds over diamond.

For both, chips happen where material is thin: at points and at narrow girdles. Which makes chip risk a setting question rather than a material one. A marquise with unprotected tips will chip in any material; the same stone with V-prongs will not.

The "my stone went dull" messages we get divide almost perfectly by material, and it is worth knowing which one you are having. On moissanite and lab grown, it is essentially never the stone โ€” it is film on the pavilion from sunscreen or hand cream, and it clears in two minutes with a warm soak and a soft brush worked from underneath through the gallery. Brushing the top never works, because the film is on the bottom.

On cubic zirconia and topaz, a soak changes nothing, because the surface itself has been abraded and there is no film to remove. That is the diagnostic: if a five-minute soak restores it, it was dirt; if it does not, the polish has gone. Polish can sometimes be recut on sapphire. On CZ it is not economic.

What actually breaks a ring

Over twenty years, the stone is rarely what changes. The metal is.

A ring is worn something like five to seven thousand days, and the underside takes nearly all the contact โ€” so a ring that looks immaculate from above can be a third thinner underneath. Rhodium plating on white gold wears through every one to two years. Prongs thin from year three to five and want re-tipping by year six to ten. The shank thins by year ten to fifteen and may need reshanking by twenty.

None of that is affected by which stone you chose. Choosing a hard stone protects the stone. Choosing a thick shank โ€” 1.8mm minimum at the base โ€” protects the ring.

Deciding

  • Engagement ring, worn every day: lab grown diamond or moissanite. Nothing below 9 belongs in this category.
  • Occasion ring worn a few times a year: white sapphire is reasonable; CZ will survive if it is genuinely occasional.
  • Pointed shape in any material: the setting decides, not the Mohs number. V-prongs or a bezel.
  • Hands-on work or machinery: the answer is not a cheaper stone but no ring at that time. Silicone breaks away under load; metal does not.
  • Any of the above: 1.8mm shank, and a bench check every two years.

My stone looks dull. Is it damaged?

Soak it in warm water with a drop of washing-up liquid for five minutes and brush gently from underneath through the gallery. If it comes back, it was film on the pavilion from sunscreen or hand cream. If it does not, the surface polish has been abraded โ€” which points to a softer material.

Does the metal wear faster than the stone?

Considerably. Gold sits at roughly Mohs 2.8, below household quartz, so it marks from the first week. Over twenty years the stone typically does not change while the metal thins, particularly on the underside. Shank thickness matters more than stone choice for the ring's lifespan.
