Ultrasonic Jewelry Cleaners: What's Safe, What Isn't, and the Hidden Risk
Ultrasonic cleaners make jewelry look brand new in minutes. They're safe for many pieces โ but they can also shake loose the very stones you're trying to clean.

Short answer
Ultrasonic cleaners are generally safe for moissanite, diamonds and solid gold or platinum. They are not safe for pearls, opals, emeralds, porous or treated stones, or plated jewelry. The hidden risk is vibration loosening small stones in pavรฉ and tennis settings, so check stones after cleaning โ and if a piece is old or has lots of tiny stones, use warm soapy water instead.
An ultrasonic cleaner uses high-frequency sound in a liquid to create tiny bubbles that burst against the jewelry, lifting dirt from places a brush can't reach. It's very effective. It's also a form of vibration, which is where the caution comes in.

The stone is rarely the problem โ the setting is. Pavรฉ stones are held by tiny beads of metal, and a worn bead that's only just gripping a stone can let go under ultrasonic vibration. That's why a stone sometimes turns up at the bottom of the tank. It isn't that the cleaner broke anything; it revealed a setting that was already failing. Oddly, that's useful to know โ but only if you catch the stone. Clean over a fine mesh basket, check the tank afterwards, and look over every stone in pavรฉ or tennis pieces before wearing them again.
Using an ultrasonic safely
Use warm water with a few drops of mild detergent or the manufacturer's solution. Run short cycles rather than long ones. Keep pieces from touching each other so they don't scratch. Rinse in clean water and dry with a soft cloth.
