Which Metal for a Bracelet
A wrist meets more hard surfaces in a week than a finger does in a month. The metal rules that apply to rings do not transfer cleanly.

Short answer
14K is the right default: harder than 18K, so it holds its shape better across fifty small settings and a clasp that is worked daily. Choose yellow or rose over white if you would rather not replate every one to two years forever. Solid 925 silver is the honest downgrade โ but only bezel-set, because silver prongs deform far faster than gold ones.
Metal advice in jewellery is written for rings, and a bracelet is a different problem. A ring sits on a finger that mostly points away from things. A wrist swings against desk edges, door handles, car doors, keyboards and bag straps all day, and the piece on it is not one solid band but fifty small settings, a chain of joints and a mechanism.
Karat: why 14K rather than 18K
Karat measures gold content, not quality. 14K is 585 parts gold per thousand; 18K is 750. The rest is an alloy of other metals, and that alloy is what gives the metal its working properties.
Pure gold is very soft. Every karat below 24 exists to make it usable, and the lower the karat the harder and more resilient the result. On a ring that is a preference. On a bracelet it compounds, because there are so many small components:
- Fifty settings. Prongs and bezel rims thin with wear, and softer metal thins faster.
- Fifty joints. Each one flexes constantly; softer metal deforms more with every flex.
- One clasp with a spring. A softer alloy loses tension sooner.
18K has a richer colour and more gold in it, and if that matters to you it is a legitimate choice. Just hold the other specifications firm.
Colour: the recurring cost nobody budgets
White gold is not naturally white. It is an alloy finished with rhodium plating, and that plating wears through and needs redoing every one to two years for as long as the piece is worn.
On a bracelet this bites harder than on a ring, for a reason people do not anticipate: frequent hand-washing. Water and soap run down the wrist constantly, and that accelerates plating wear at exactly the point where the bracelet sits.
Yellow gold, rose gold and platinum never need it. Choosing a warm metal removes a cost that otherwise recurs for the life of the piece.

Silver, honestly
Sterling silver sits at roughly Mohs 2.6, against a stone at 9.25 or 10. That gap is wider than gold's, and it runs the wrong way: the stones stay perfect while the fifty small pieces of metal holding them give way.
That is not an argument against silver. It is an argument for bezel setting in silver โ a continuous rim with no thin projecting element to deform, rather than prongs that will.
Two more silver facts worth knowing on a bracelet. It tarnishes through a reaction with air that continues even unworn, so it needs airtight storage with a silica gel sachet โ and in a hot, humid climate that happens noticeably faster. And it is soft enough that a knock against a door frame can deform a link rather than just mark it.

The metal specification that decides a bracelet's lifespan is not the karat โ it is solid versus hollow, and nothing external shows which you have. Hollow links and hollow clasps are lighter and cheaper, and they look identical in a photograph. But hollow metal crushes rather than bends, splits at the seam, and leaves no solid material for solder to key into. That is why some bracelet breaks genuinely cannot be repaired invisibly, and why "it can't be fixed" is sometimes an honest answer rather than a brush-off.
Gram weight is the only number that answers it. Ask for it โ and note that our own product pages do not publish gram weight yet, which is a gap we would rather name than have you discover.
Matching what else is on that wrist
A bracelet rarely sits alone. Two rules from the bench.
Match by fineness number, not colour word. "Yellow gold" is not a specification; 585 or 750 is. 14K beside 18K yellow reads as two different tones, and adjacent pieces on the same wrist are exactly where that shows.
Do not let a stone-set piece rub a plain one. Stones at Mohs 9 and above against gold at roughly 2.8 is not a fair contest, and over years the stones cut a visible track into the plain metal. If a tennis bracelet will sit against a watch or a plain bangle, keep a gap or accept the wear. Mixing platinum with gold has the same one-directional effect, since platinum displaces metal rather than losing it.
What to specify
- 14K as the default; 18K only if colour depth matters more than resilience.
- Yellow or rose if you would rather never replate.
- Solid links and a solid clasp โ ask for the gram weight.
- Bezel setting if the metal is 925 silver.
- Clasp in the same metal and fineness as the bracelet.
- Matching fineness with anything else worn on that wrist.
