Chain Bracelet Types: Which Ones Actually Last
Some chains fail at a single weak link. Others cannot fail that way at all.

Short answer
For daily wear, choose curb, Figaro, rope or box chains β solid links that distribute stress. Be careful with herringbone and Omega, which kink permanently and cannot be repaired invisibly, and with hollow versions of any chain, which crush rather than bend. Ask two questions of any chain bracelet: is it solid or hollow, and what is the gram weight. Those two answers predict its lifespan better than the style name.
Chain bracelets look similar in photographs and behave very differently on a wrist. The difference is mostly not the pattern β it is whether the links are solid, how the stress travels through them, and whether a failure can be repaired.

The question that predicts everything: solid or hollow? Many chains are made with hollow links β a tube of gold rather than solid wire. It looks identical, weighs a fraction, and costs proportionally less. The problem is how it fails: a solid link bends and can be straightened or replaced, while a hollow link crushes, and a crushed hollow link cannot be restored. It is also very difficult to solder without collapsing. Hollow chains have a legitimate place β large statement pieces that would be unwearably heavy otherwise β but for a bracelet worn daily, solid is the answer. Ask directly, and ask for the gram weight, because that is where the truth is.
Why herringbone is the one to think twice about
Herringbone is beautiful β it lies completely flat and reflects like a sheet of liquid metal. It is also the chain most likely to be ruined.
Its flat interlocking plates rely on staying in one plane. Fold it, twist it, or catch it in a sleeve, and it develops a permanent kink. Once creased, it cannot be pressed out invisibly β the crease catches light differently forever and often becomes a break point.
If you love the look, treat it as an occasion piece rather than a daily one, never store it coiled tightly, and lay it flat rather than hanging it.
Where chains actually break
Almost never in the middle of the run. The failure points are consistent:
- At the clasp attachment β the jump ring connecting chain to clasp is often thinner than the chain itself. This is the single most common break.
- At the clasp spring β mechanical parts wear out. A lobster clasp that has become easy to open has already failed.
- At a solder joint from a previous repair β a repaired link is usually the next one to go.
- Wherever it catches repeatedly β a watch clasp, a bag strap, a desk edge.
The practical consequence: when buying, ask about the jump ring and clasp as much as the chain. A heavy chain on a light clasp is a heavy chain that will be lost.
Choosing a width
Chain bracelets are quoted in millimetre width, and small numbers behave very differently from each other.
- Under 2Β mm β delicate, layers beautifully, but genuinely fragile in solid gold and very fragile hollow.
- 2β4Β mm β the everyday range. Robust enough to wear without thinking about it.
- 4β7Β mm β substantial, and where hollow construction becomes common. Check.
- Above 7Β mm β a statement piece. Almost always hollow in gold, for weight reasons.
Silver or gold for a chain?
Silver is softer, so a silver chain of a given width deforms more readily than the same chain in 14K. For fine chains that difference matters β a 1.5Β mm silver bracelet worn daily will not last the way a 1.5Β mm gold one will.
If budget points to silver, compensate with width rather than accepting a fine chain. A 3Β mm silver curb will outlive a 1.5Β mm one several times over, and it costs very little more.
