Black Friday Jewelry: What to Actually Watch For

In most categories the percentage is the story. In jewellery it is the least informative number on the page β€” because one component of the price is published daily and the rest is not.

Written by the Mapple Gems workshop, Surat Β· Updated 1 October 2026

Short answer

Ignore the percentage and check the specification. Gold trades on a public daily market and cannot quietly get cheaper, so a large discount on a heavy gold piece usually means the pre-sale price was set to be discounted. Compare gram weight, shank thickness, stone millimetres and accent count between the sale piece and its full-price equivalent.

Jewellery is an unusually difficult category to discount honestly, for one structural reason: a large part of what you are buying is a commodity with a published price. That constraint does not go away in November.

Why the percentage tells you almost nothing

A discount is a comparison against a reference price, and in jewellery the reference price is frequently a device rather than a record. A struck-through figure that has been struck through permanently was never a price anyone paid; it is an anchor. The percentage is then arithmetic performed on a number of the seller's choosing.

This is not unique to jewellery, but it bites harder here because buyers have very little else to calibrate against. Nobody knows what a 1.5Β ct halo in 14K β€œshould” cost, so the only available signal is the one on the page β€” which is exactly the signal that has been engineered.

The one component you can verify

Gold has a public daily market price. Multiply the gram weight by the fineness (0.585 for 14K, 0.750 for 18K) and by the current price per gram, and you have the raw metal value of the piece. It is a floor, not a price β€” labour, setting, casting loss, stones and margin sit above it β€” but it is a real number that no sale can argue with.

Which leads to a useful rule of thumb: the heavier the gold content, the less room there is for a genuine deep discount. A very large percentage off a substantial gold piece is a signal to look harder at the pre-sale price, not a signal to buy quickly.

What can genuinely get cheaper β€” and what cannot

Component Can it move in a sale? Why
Gold Barely Publicly traded daily; nobody buys it cheaper in November
Lab grown stones Yes Prices fell steeply 2020–2024 and sit near production cost; stock-clearing is real
Moissanite Yes Supply is unconstrained, so the stone is the flexible part of the price
Bench labour No Setting, finishing and polishing take the same hours in any month
Margin Yes This is where an honest discount usually comes from

Where a sale quietly cuts cost instead

The version worth watching for is not a fake percentage but a changed specification carrying the same design name. Four places it happens:

  • A thinner shank. Below about 1.8Β mm at the base, a daily-wear ring is on a countdown, and shank thickness appears on almost no product page.
  • Lower gram weight. The same silhouette, less metal underneath. Invisible in a top-down photograph.
  • Plated rather than solid. If the word β€œgold” needs a preposition β€” over, filled, plated, vermeil β€” it is not solid metal.
  • Fewer or smaller accents. A halo described by name rather than by stone count and millimetre size can shrink without the description changing.

None of these are dishonest in themselves. A lighter build at a lower price is a legitimate product. It stops being legitimate when it wears the same name and photograph as the heavier one.

The timing problem nobody mentions

Late-November sales sit awkwardly against Christmas if the piece is made to order rather than picked off a shelf. Production takes about a week on the bench, and transit adds a week and a half to two weeks on a standard service. That is comfortable β€” until a resize is needed, which means a second journey each way and can add three to four weeks.

So the honest advice is that a Black Friday order is a Christmas order only if the size is certain. If it is not, the deadline is not the sale date and not the shipping cutoff; it is whether you can afford a resize before the day.

An honest concession

We run promotions too, and the structurally honest account of what a discount on a made-to-order piece is made of is this: it comes out of margin and out of filling bench capacity in a quieter period. It does not come out of the gold, because we buy gold at the same public price as everyone else, and it should never come out of the specification. So put the same question to us that this article asks you to put to everyone: compared with the full-price version, what changed? If the answer is not β€œnothing”, ask what.

Four checks before you buy anything in a sale

  1. Screenshot the page before the sale starts. A price history you took yourself beats any claim about a reference price.
  2. Ask for the specification in writing: gram weight at your size, shank thickness at the base, centre stone millimetres, accent count and accent material.
  3. Ask what material every stone is, not just the centre. Accents under about 0.2Β ct are never individually certified in any material, so the answer has to come from the seller and belongs in writing.
  4. Work out the metal floor from grams and fineness. If the sale price sits near or below it, something in the description is not what you think it is.

Questions people ask

Are Black Friday jewelry deals real?

Some are. The reliable way to tell is not the percentage but the specification: compare gram weight, shank thickness, stone millimetres and accent count against the full-price equivalent, and screenshot prices before the sale begins so you have your own record.

Is Black Friday a good time to buy an engagement ring?

It can be, if the ring is already specified and the size is known. It is a poor time to make the decision itself, because a deadline plus a countdown timer is the worst possible condition for choosing something you intend to wear for decades.

Does gold get cheaper in a sale?

Not really. Gold is traded on a public daily market, so every maker pays broadly the same for it. A discount on a heavy gold piece comes out of margin, or out of the build β€” which is why gram weight is the number to check.

Will a Black Friday order arrive before Christmas?

For a made-to-order piece, production and transit are quoted separately and both need counting. The real risk is not the shipping estimate but a resize, which sends the piece back and forth and can add several weeks. If the size is uncertain, order earlier than the cutoff suggests.

What does a permanently struck-through price mean?

It means the higher figure is functioning as an anchor rather than as a record of a price customers paid. Treat the lower number as the actual price and judge it on the specification, not on the gap between the two.
