Where the Money Actually Goes in a Ring

Metal, stone, labour, and everything else. The last category is usually the biggest.

Short answer

A ring’s cost has four parts: metal (weight Γ— karat Γ— the day’s gold price β€” a public number), stone, labour (casting, setting, finishing), and everything else β€” premises, staff, marketing, returns, and each layer of margin between the bench and you. The first three are broadly similar wherever a ring is made. The fourth is where the same specification ends up costing wildly different amounts, and it is the only part nobody itemises.

Jewellery pricing feels opaque because it is presented as a single number. It is not a single thing, and once you can see the parts, comparing two quotes becomes straightforward.

1. Metal β€” the part you can verify

This is the most checkable component in the whole purchase, and almost nobody checks it.

Gold trades on a public market that moves daily. A ring’s metal cost is essentially its finished weight in grams, multiplied by the proportion of pure gold for its karat, multiplied by the current price β€” plus the alloy and some inevitable loss in working.

So if a seller will give you the gram weight and karat, you can sanity-check the metal component yourself in thirty seconds. Very few jewellery websites publish gram weight, and there is no good reason for that β€” it is a straightforward fact about the object.

2. Stone

Highly variable, and the one component where the market has genuinely moved.

Lab grown diamond prices fell steeply between 2020 and 2024 before flattening near production cost. Moissanite has been inexpensive throughout. Mined diamond pricing works on a different logic entirely, tied to a supply chain built around scarcity.

The practical point: for lab grown and moissanite, the stone is often no longer the largest line item. On a modest centre stone in a substantial 18K setting, the metal and labour together can exceed the stone. That surprises people, and it should change how you allocate a budget.

3. Labour

The least visible part and the one that determines whether the ring is still good in twenty years.

  • Model and wax β€” one-off for a custom piece, amortised for an existing design.
  • Casting β€” relatively fixed per piece.
  • Setting β€” scales with stone count. A solitaire is one setting; a pavΓ© halo is sixty. This is why two rings with identical stone weight can differ substantially in price.
  • Finishing and polishing β€” where cheap work is cut, because it is the least visible in a photograph and the most visible in your hand.

4. Everything else β€” and why the same ring varies so much. Metal is a public price. Stones trade in a competitive market. Bench labour differs, but not by multiples. So when the same specification β€” same karat, same gram weight, same stone size and grade β€” costs three times more at one seller than another, the difference is almost entirely in the fourth category: retail premises, staff, advertising, returns provision, and the margin taken by each party between the bench and the counter. None of that is dishonest, and none of it is in the ring. It is simply worth knowing that it is what you are choosing between.

How to compare two quotes properly

Ask both sellers for the same five figures. If either will not give them, that is itself the comparison.

  1. Finished metal weight in grams, and karat.
  2. Centre stone size in millimetres β€” plus carat or DEW.
  3. Number of accent stones and their size.
  4. Shank width and profile height in millimetres.
  5. Production time and transit time, separately.

Two rings that look identical online frequently differ by a factor of two in gram weight. That is a real difference in the object β€” in how it feels, how it wears, and how long it lasts β€” and it is invisible in a photograph.

Where to put your money

Given all of the above, the allocation we would suggest for a ring meant to last:

  • Do not skimp on shank thickness. 1.8Β mm and up. It costs a little gold and it is the difference between a ring that holds its shape and one that does not.
  • Buy the metal you actually want. You cannot change it later without remaking the piece.
  • Be moderate on stone size. Especially with moissanite, where larger is less discreet rather than more impressive.
  • Pay for setting quality rather than stone count. Sixty badly set stones is worse than twelve well set ones.
  • Do not pay for grades you cannot see β€” VVS clarity, D colour under yellow gold.

A note on discounts

A permanent struck-through β€œcompare at” price is a pricing device, not a discount. It is especially common in lab grown diamonds, where falling production costs made inflated reference prices easy to construct.

Judge the actual number against what the same specification β€” same gram weight, same stone millimetres β€” costs elsewhere today. Never against the number printed beside it.
