The plain version

This is the same duet setting as our pave version with the small diamonds taken out of the bands. What is left is two polished wires and two pears, and the ring changes character completely: less light along the finger, far more attention on the outline of the stones themselves. If you like the architecture but not the sparkle of a set band, this is the one.

Two stones, opposed

One pear points up the finger, the other points down, and the open space between them is deliberate. From above the ring reads as a narrow lens shape with a diamond at each end. Because nothing sits underneath, light passes straight through both stones.

The pear cut

A brilliant cut with a rounded end and a point. Pears are the hardest shape to pair, since the two must agree on outline, depth and how the point sits, and there is no pave here to distract from a mismatch. We cut and select them together rather than pulling two stones from stock.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. All three golds are photographed here. On a ring this bare the metal is half of what you see, so look at the three colours side by side. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

Both pear diamonds are graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificates come with the ring at no extra charge. Each states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. Both bands are drawn and shaped so they stay parallel under pressure, and the two pears are set by hand from the sides. A plain band shows every mark, so the polishing here takes longer than on a set one. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush. This is about the easiest ring we make to keep clean, since there is nothing for anything to collect behind. The point of a pear is its thinnest part, so avoid knocks. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity are the diamonds? Both pears are E colour and VVS2 clarity, on every metal and every carat weight. With no accent stones nearby, the clarity of these two is all you see.

How is the carat weight split? The 2, 3, 4 and 5 carat options are the combined weight of the two pears, divided evenly between them. If you would prefer one larger and one smaller, tell us when you order.

Is the certificate really free? Yes. IGI reports for both stones are included in the price on every variant.

Is a two wire band strong enough for daily wear? Yes. The two bands brace each other and rejoin at the back, which makes the ring stiffer than a single wire of the same weight.

Will a wedding band sit flush? A straight band sits against the lower wire. Many people wear this ring alone, since the double band already reads as two.

Can it be resized? Yes, at the back where the bands rejoin. One or two sizes either way is straightforward.
