Two stones, opposed

Set the same way round, two pears look like a mistake. Turned against each other they balance, and the space between them becomes part of the design. From above the ring reads as a narrow open oval with a diamond at each end of it.

The bands are the setting

There is no basket underneath. Each pear is held by the two pave rails themselves, which is why the stones appear to float. It is a longer setting job than a conventional head, and it is the reason the ring looks as light as it does on the hand.

The pear cut

A brilliant cut with a rounded end and a point, cut to hold light through the belly and flash at the tip. Pears are the most demanding shape to match, because the pair has to agree on outline, depth and how the point sits. We cut and select them together rather than pulling two stones from stock.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. All three golds are photographed here. The open centre means you see a lot of metal edge on this design, so the colour choice carries further than usual. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

Both pear diamonds are graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificates come with the ring at no extra charge. Each states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown. The pave diamonds are matched to the same E and VVS2 grade.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. The two rails are shaped so the gap between them holds the pears at exactly the right spacing, then both stones are set by hand from the sides. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush. The open centre makes this one of the easier rings to clean, but brush both sides of each band where the pave meets the metal. The point of a pear is its thinnest part, so avoid knocks. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity are the diamonds? Both pears are E colour and VVS2 clarity, on every metal and every carat weight, and the pave is matched to them.

How is the carat weight split? The 2, 3, 4 and 5 carat options are the combined weight of the two pears, divided evenly between them. If you would prefer one larger and one smaller, tell us when you order.

Is the certificate really free? Yes. IGI reports for both stones are included in the price on every variant.

Will a wedding band sit flush? A straight band sits against the lower rail. Many people wear this ring on its own, because the split already gives it the look of two.

Can it be resized? Yes, at the back where the rails rejoin. One or two sizes either way is straightforward.

Can I have different shapes in place of the two pears? Yes, a pear with an oval or a marquise is a common request in this setting. Tell us when you order.
