The best of two cuts

For decades the choice for a rectangular stone was the emerald cut, which is elegant but quiet, with broad calm flashes rather than sparkle. The radiant was developed to answer that. It keeps the rectangle and the cropped corners, and replaces the step facets with a mixed brilliant pattern that scatters light the way a round does. The result is the most fiery of the rectangular shapes.

Those cropped corners also matter in daily wear. A sharp cornered princess or square stone has four vulnerable points. The radiant does not, which makes it one of the toughest fancy shapes to own.

Why a solitaire

A radiant already has so much sparkle that it does not need accents to make an impression. A plain four claw setting shows the whole outline, lets light in from the sides, and keeps the band free to resize and to sit flush against any wedding band. It is the clearest way to see what the cut is doing.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. White metal emphasises the crisp geometry of the radiant, yellow gold warms it and gives a vintage feel, and rose gold softens the corners. 10K is the hardest alloy, 14K is the everyday balance, and 18K is the richest colour but the softest metal. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. The four claws are placed at the cropped corners of your stone, which is where a radiant is best held, and the ring is finished by hand for your carat weight and finger size. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush. A radiant is a deep stone, so grease underneath dulls its fire quickly. Brush under the head, rinse and dry with a soft cloth, and take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity is the diamond? Every centre stone is E colour and VVS2 clarity, on every metal and every carat weight. The IGI report in the box states both grades.

Radiant or emerald cut? Choose emerald for calm, broad flashes and a see through table. Choose radiant for sparkle and fire in the same rectangular outline.

Is a radiant durable? Very. The cropped corners remove the fragile points that square cut stones have.

Will a wedding band sit flush? Yes. The band is plain.

Can it be resized? Yes, freely.
