Five stones, graduated

A five stone ring is traditionally read as a story in stones, and here each pair steps down in size and changes shape: the rectangular radiant in the middle, a pair of ovals beside it, then a pair of small rounds at the ends. The mix of shapes gives the row rhythm, and the graduation draws the eye back to the centre. With around one and a half carats in the side stones alone, this is a substantial, statement ring.

The radiant cut

A radiant has the clean rectangular outline and cropped corners of an emerald cut, but it is faceted like a brilliant, so it sparkles intensely rather than showing broad steps. It is one of the liveliest fancy shapes, and it hides small inclusions well, though every centre stone we use is E colour and VVS2 clarity regardless.

Why every stone is bezel set

Bezel setting each of the five stones gives the ring a smooth, low profile with no claws to catch, and it protects every edge. It also gives the whole design a contemporary look that sets it apart from a traditional claw set five stone band.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. Five bezels outline five stones in metal, so the colour shows strongly: yellow gold is bold and warm, white gold is sleek, and rose gold is soft. 10K is the hardest alloy, 14K is the everyday balance, and 18K is the richest colour but the softest metal. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. The side stones are matched in pairs to your centre stone, each bezel is formed and burnished by hand, and the ring is finished for your carat weight and finger size. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush. Brush along the underside of the row of stones. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity is the diamond? Every centre stone is E colour and VVS2 clarity, on every metal and every carat weight. The side stones are matched to the same grade.

Does the carat size include the side stones? No. The carat option is the weight of the radiant centre stone. The side stones add around 1.5 carat.

Does the IGI certificate cover all five stones? It covers the centre stone.

Will a wedding band sit flush? A straight band sits alongside. The bezels keep the profile low.

Can it be resized? Yes. The band below the stones is plain.
