Graduation is one of the oldest devices in ring design and it does something a row of equal stones cannot. Diminishing sizes create false perspective, the same trick a painter uses to suggest distance, so the shoulders appear to recede and the centre stone appears to sit further forward than it actually does. It also solves a practical problem specific to a pear, which is that a tapered stone has a wide end and a narrow one. Graduated shoulders give the eye a smooth transition from the widest part of the diamond down to the band, instead of an abrupt step.

Band details

The shank is slim and rounded, carrying the graduated accents down each shoulder and running plain from there to the base. The plain lower section keeps the ring comfortable and leaves room for resizing.

Rose gold is shown here and warm metal between the graduated stones makes the change in size easy to read, which is what gives the shoulders their depth. Yellow gold does the same more traditionally. What does graduated mean on a ring shank?
The accent stones reduce in size as they move away from the centre stone. It creates a sense of perspective, makes the centre stone look further forward and gives a tapered shape like a pear a smooth visual transition down to the band.

Is the point of a pear fragile?
It is the thinnest part of the stone, which is why it sits inside a V shaped claw tip that covers it completely. Any knock lands on metal rather than diamond.

What is a hidden halo?
A ring of small diamonds set around the basket beneath the centre stone. Invisible from above so the ring keeps a clean outline, and visible as a line of light from the side.

Should a pear be worn point up or point down?
