The claw over the point

The tip of a pear is the thinnest part of the stone and the part that chips. A plain round claw sitting near it does not protect it. We use a V shaped claw that wraps the point on both sides, so any knock lands on metal rather than on the diamond. It also holds the stone straight, because a pear that rotates even slightly in its setting looks crooked on the hand immediately.

Set point up the finger

The point faces the knuckle rather than the wrist. Worn this way the taper of the stone continues the line of the finger and the hand reads longer and slimmer. It is a small decision that changes how the ring looks more than the carat weight does.

A band kept thin on purpose

The shank is a plain round wire, no accents, no split, no twist. A pear has a busy outline already, with a round end, two shoulders and a point, and a decorated band fights it. Keeping the metal thin also lets the widest part of the stone overhang the band slightly, which makes the diamond look larger.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. This ring was photographed in yellow gold, and every metal is made to order and priced above. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. Each pear is checked for symmetry before it is set, because the two shoulders must mirror each other and the point must line up with the centre of the rounded end. The V claw is cut and shaped to that individual stone. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush, brushing up into the open basket from underneath. Check the V claw at the point once or twice a year, since that is the claw that takes the knocks. Take the ring off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

What colour and clarity is the diamond? E colour and VVS2 clarity, on every metal and every carat weight.

Which way should the point face? We set it point up toward the knuckle, which is how it is photographed here and what almost everyone prefers. If you want it point down, tell us when you order and we will set it that way.

Does a pear look bigger than a round of the same weight? Yes. A pear spreads its weight along its length, so a 2 carat pear covers noticeably more of the finger than a 2 carat round.

Is the certificate really free? Yes. The IGI report for the centre stone is included in the price on every variant.

Will a wedding band sit flush? A straight band sits flush against the shoulders but leaves a small gap under the point. A band with a shallow V or a curve follows the point exactly, and we make those to match.

Can it be resized? Yes. The band is plain all the way around, so one or two sizes either way is straightforward.
