The curl is the ring

Most settings try to disappear. This one does the opposite: a broad ribbon of gold arcs over the stone, turns back on itself and runs away into the shank, and it is as much of the design as the diamond is. It takes a substantial weight of metal to hold that shape, which is why the ring feels solid on the hand in a way a wire band never does.

Set east west, under the arc

The pear lies across the finger with its point clear of the curl. Turned this way the stone reads wide rather than long, and the asymmetry of a pear gives the sweep of metal something to answer. Set north south the two would fight.

Polished, not textured

The whole surface is mirror polished. On a form with this much curvature that is the hardest finish to achieve and the least forgiving to keep, but it is the only one that makes the gold look liquid. A brushed or matte finish flattens it completely.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. This ring was photographed in yellow gold, which suits a sculptural form better than the whites do, but every metal is made to order and priced above. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years, and on a shape with this much surface the plating shows its age sooner.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. The curl is carved and filed by hand from solid metal, then polished in stages, because a form like this shows every facet of the making. The stone is set last, under the arc. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

About the photographs

One of the photographs shows this ring worn with a plain band shaped to sit against it. That band is a separate piece and is not included, and we make it to match if you would like the pair.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush, working under the curl and behind the stone. A polished surface shows fingerprints and light scratches with wear, which is normal; we will repolish the ring for you whenever it needs it. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity is the diamond? Every centre stone is E colour and VVS2 clarity, on every metal and every carat weight.

Is the point of the pear protected? Yes. It sits inside the sweep of the metal rather than standing out beyond it, which is the safest place on a ring for the most fragile part of the stone.

Is the certificate really free? Yes. The IGI report is included in the price on every variant.

Will a wedding band sit flush? Not a straight one. The plain shaped band in the photographs is made for this ring and is sold separately.

Can it be resized? Within a size either way, yes. The curve and the varying thickness mean larger changes are better handled by remaking it, so please order your correct size and ask us for a free sizer if you are unsure.

Does it feel heavy? It is heavier than a plain solitaire, noticeably so in 18K. Most people who choose it want exactly that.
