The halo nobody else sees

A conventional halo surrounds the stone on top, changes its outline and makes a pear read rounder than it is. A hidden halo is set into the side of the basket, facing outward from the profile, so the shape of the diamond stays exactly as cut and the sparkle only appears as the hand turns. It is the way to add diamonds to a solitaire without making it look like a different ring.

A pear keeps its outline

The point and the shoulders of a pear are the whole appeal of the shape. Nothing here interrupts them: four claws, two at the shoulders and one covering the tip, and no metal or stones crossing the outline anywhere.

The point is covered

The tip is the thinnest part of a pear and where damage happens. Ours sits inside a full claw rather than standing clear of one, which costs a fraction of the outline and saves the stone.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. This ring was photographed in yellow gold, and in white metal in one image, but every metal is made to order and priced above. A popular version uses a yellow band with a white metal hidden halo, so the small stones read as bright as possible; tell us if you want it made that way. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown. The hidden halo diamonds are matched to the same E and VVS2 grade.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. The halo is set into the basket before the head is joined to the band, because afterwards there is no access to it. The claws are fitted last, to the measured stone. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

About the photographs

One photograph shows this ring with several stacking bands. Those bands are separate pieces and are not included. The ring box shown is our standard packaging and comes with every order.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush, brushing up into the hidden halo from below, which is where anything that gets in will stay. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity are the diamonds? The centre pear and every hidden halo stone are E colour and VVS2 clarity, on all metals and all carat weights.

Does the carat weight include the hidden halo? No. The 2, 3, 4 and 5 carat options refer to the centre pear. The halo diamonds are in addition.

Is the certificate really free? Yes. The IGI report for the centre stone is included in the price on every variant.

Does a hidden halo make the stone look bigger? Slightly, from the side, and it lifts the stone a little higher. From above it changes nothing, which is the point of it.

Will a wedding band sit flush? Yes. The band is plain and round and the halo sits above it.

Can it be resized? Yes, at the back. One or two sizes either way is straightforward.
