Brilliant against step

The pear and its pave are brilliant cut, covered in triangular and kite shaped facets that scatter light into quick flashes. The baguettes on the band are step cut, with long parallel facets that reflect in broad calm planes, like a row of small mirrors. Set next to each other, each makes the other more obvious. It is the same trick used in art deco jewellery a century ago and it still works.

The hidden halo

Small round diamonds circle the outside of the basket, below the girdle and facing outward. From above the pear outline stays clean, which matters on a shape chosen for its silhouette. From the side, the stone sits on a band of light rather than on metal.

The point is protected

The tip of a pear is the most fragile part of the stone. It sits inside a v claw that wraps around both edges of the point rather than pressing down on it. The rounded end is held by two further claws kept deliberately narrow.

Why clarity matters on the baguettes

Step cut facets are large and open, with nowhere for an inclusion to hide. A VVS2 baguette stays clean to the eye. On a channel set band where the stones sit side by side in a row, one included stone would be obvious immediately, which is why every baguette is matched to the same E and VVS2 grade as the centre.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. Both rings are made in the same metal. Yellow gold is photographed here, and the channel walls holding the baguettes read as a clean band of warm metal against the stones. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the set at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown.

About the bow tie

Every pear has the potential for a bow tie, a dark band across the middle caused by the proportions of the cut rather than by colour or clarity. No certificate grades it. We check each pear by eye and reject the ones that show it.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. The baguettes are cut to a length that divides evenly around your finger size, so the band comes out symmetrical rather than leaving an odd gap at the back. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush. Brush up into the basket to keep the hidden halo bright, and run the brush along both channel edges on the band, where dirt collects against the metal walls.

Questions we are asked

Does the price include both rings? Yes. Every price on this page is for the engagement ring and the baguette wedding band together.

What colour and clarity is the diamond? Every centre stone is E colour and VVS2 clarity, on every metal and every carat weight. All accents on both rings are matched to the same grade.

Does the carat weight include the accents? No. The 2, 3, 4 and 5 carat options refer to the centre pear. The hidden halo, the pave and the baguettes are in addition.

Is the certificate really free? Yes. The IGI report for the centre stone is included in the price on every variant.

Will the band sit flush against the engagement ring? Closely. The point of the pear extends over the shank, so the band sits against the straight section. Many customers wear the band below the engagement ring for this reason.

Can it be resized? The engagement ring takes about one size either way. A channel set baguette band cannot be resized much at all without disturbing the stones, so please measure carefully and we will build to your size.
