A halo that comes to a point

Ringing a round stone is straightforward. A pear has a point at one end and a curve at the other, so the halo stones have to reduce in size as they approach the tip, and the last one has to sit exactly on the point or the outline looks blunt. It is the part of this ring that takes the most skill, and the part most obviously wrong when it is done badly.

Size on the hand

A halo extends the outline of the centre stone, and a pave band extends the line further along the finger. Together they make a two carat pear read closer to three, which is the reason this combination is one of the most requested designs in engagement rings.

The point is covered

Beneath the halo, the tip of the pear sits inside a full claw rather than standing clear of one. The halo protects it further, which makes this one of the safer ways to wear a pear every day.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. This ring was photographed in yellow gold, but every metal is made to order and priced above. A yellow band with a white metal halo makes the centre stone read larger; tell us if you want it made that way. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown. Every accent is matched to the same E and VVS2 grade, which matters because a halo sits directly against the centre stone.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. The halo is built around the measured stone so it follows that particular pear, and the pave is set last so the small stones sit level along a shank that is already true. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

About the photographs

Some photographs show this ring with stacking bands or worn alongside another ring. Those pieces are separate and are not included. The ring box shown is our standard packaging and comes with every order.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush, brushing under the halo from below and along both sides of the pave. A halo collects more than a plain setting, so clean it weekly. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity are the diamonds? The centre pear and every accent are E colour and VVS2 clarity, on all metals and all carat weights.

Does the carat weight include the halo and pave? No. The 2, 3, 4 and 5 carat options refer to the centre pear. All accents are in addition.

Is the certificate really free? Yes. The IGI report for the centre stone is included in the price on every variant.

Can I wear the point facing my wrist? Yes. Tell us when you order and we will set it that way round at no extra charge.

Will a wedding band sit flush? The halo overhangs slightly, so a straight band leaves a small gap at the point. A shaped band follows the outline, and we make those to match.

Can it be resized? Yes, at the back where the band is plain. One or two sizes either way is straightforward.
