The knife edge band

Rather than a rounded or flat shank, this band is formed to a ridge along its centre, like the spine of a blade. The two sloping faces catch light from different directions, so a very thin band still reads as a definite line on the finger instead of disappearing. It is a harder shape to make well than a plain round shank, and it is the reason this ring looks sharper than a comparable one.

Why bezel set a pear

The point of a pear is the thinnest part of the stone and the part that takes every knock. A claw can protect it, but a claw can also be caught, bent or lifted. A bezel encloses the point completely inside metal, with the rim following the taper down to the tip. Nothing is exposed. For anyone who has chipped a stone before, or who works with their hands, this is the answer.

The hardest bezel to cut

Forming a bezel around a round stone is routine. Forming one around a pear means the rim has to stay an even thickness while it travels from a wide curve to a sharp point, and any variation shows immediately against the outline of the diamond. It is cut and chased by hand around your individual stone, which is why we cannot make these in advance.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. Yellow gold is photographed here. A knife edge shank is by nature a slender shape, so on 4 and 5 carat we would point you towards 10K or 14K, which are the harder alloys and keep the ridge crisp for longer. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown.

About the bow tie

Every pear has the potential for a bow tie, a dark band across the middle caused by the proportions of the cut. It is not graded on any certificate, because it is a matter of how the stone was shaped rather than of colour or clarity. We check each pear by eye and reject the ones that show it.

Made to order in our own workshop

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush. A bezel keeps dirt out far more effectively than claws, so this is among the easiest settings to maintain. Wipe the two faces of the knife edge to keep them bright.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity is the diamond? Every centre stone is E colour and VVS2 clarity, on every metal and every carat weight.

Does the bezel make the stone look smaller? The rim covers the extreme edge, but it also adds its own outline. Most people find a bezel set pear reads about the same size, with a cleaner silhouette.

Is the certificate really free? Yes. The IGI report for the centre stone is included in the price on every variant.

Will a wedding band sit flush against it? Closely. The bezel sits low, though the point of the pear extends over the shank. A band with a shallow V notch nests under it perfectly.

Can it be resized? Yes, though a knife edge shank takes a little more work than a plain one. There are no stones in the band.
