Half a bezel, and which half

The metal wraps the lower flank of the pear and carries on over the tip, which is the part of the stone that chips. The upper curve stays bare against skin. You get the protection where it is needed and the outline where it is seen, and the ring keeps the full width of the diamond rather than losing a rim of it all the way round.

Set east west

Turned across the finger instead of along it, the pear spans the hand and sits low. It does not point at the fingertip, it does not catch on a sleeve, and the asymmetry of the shape gives the curve of the band something to answer.

One continuous line

The band is not a circle with a setting fixed on top. It rises on one side, cradles the stone and falls away on the other, thickening only where it has to hold something. That is why the ring reads as carved rather than assembled, and why it works without a single accent stone.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. This ring was photographed in yellow gold, which gives the strongest contrast at the bezel wall, but every metal is made to order and priced above. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown. With no accents on the ring, that report covers all of it.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. The bezel wall is formed against the measured stone so it follows the curve of the pear without a gap and closes cleanly over the point, and the band is shaped and polished along its whole length. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

About the photographs

Several of the photographs show this ring worn with a curved band set with small diamonds. That band is a separate piece and is not included. We make it shaped to nest against this ring, so ask us if you would like the pair.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush, brushing along the open side of the stone and under the curve of the band. A half bezel collects far less than claws do. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity is the diamond? Every centre stone is E colour and VVS2 clarity, on every metal and every carat weight.

Is the point of the pear protected? Yes. The bezel wall closes over the tip, which is where pears are almost always damaged.

Is the certificate really free? Yes. The IGI report is included in the price on every variant.

Will a wedding band sit flush? Not a straight one, because the shank curves. The shaped band in the photographs is made for exactly this ring and is sold separately.

Can it be resized? Yes, at the back where the band is plainest, though the curve limits how far. One size either way is safe; beyond that we would rather remake it.

Can I have this with diamonds along the band? Yes, we make that version too. Ask us and we will quote it.
