Two wires, one ring

The shank is not split at the front and joined at the back: both wires run the full circumference, evenly spaced, meeting only at the setting. Worn on the hand it gives the look of a solitaire stacked with a plain band, without the two rubbing against each other or spinning out of line, which is what happens to a real pair over a few years.

Why it suits a pear

A pear is wide at one end and pointed at the other, and it can look top heavy over a single thin wire. Two wires give the stone a visual base twice as wide while using no more metal across the top, so the proportions settle without the band becoming chunky.

The point is covered

The tip of a pear is the thinnest part of the stone and where damage happens. Ours sits inside a full claw rather than standing clear of one, which costs a little of the outline and saves the diamond.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. This ring was photographed in yellow gold, but every metal is made to order and priced above. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown. With no accents anywhere, that report describes the whole ring.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. Both wires are drawn and formed so they stay parallel under pressure and the gap between them remains even the whole way round, which is the entire difficulty of this design. The claws are fitted last, to the measured stone. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush, running the brush between the two wires and behind the stone. The gap collects soap more than a solid band does, so rinse it properly. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity is the diamond? Every centre stone is E colour and VVS2 clarity, on every metal and every carat weight.

Are two thin wires strong enough? Yes. They brace each other through the setting and carry load better than a single wire of the same total weight. We do thicken them slightly on the four and five carat versions.

Is the certificate really free? Yes. The IGI report is included in the price on every variant.

Will a wedding band sit flush? Yes, against the outer wire. Many people wear this ring alone, since the double band already gives the stacked look.

Can it be resized? Yes, at the back, where both wires are cut and rejoined together. One or two sizes either way is straightforward.

Can I have a different stone shape? Yes. An oval, a marquise or a round all sit well on this band. Tell us when you order.
