A pear needs shoulders that widen

A pear is wide at one end and pointed at the other, which can leave a plain band looking too thin beneath it. Building the shoulders up in graduated stones fills that space, so the outline flows from the band into the stone instead of stopping abruptly where the claws begin.

Mixed shapes, gathered not lined up

The accents are not a row of matched pave. Round brilliants sit next to straight baguettes at slightly different heights, which is how cluster rings were built a century ago. It gives a modern pear an antique setting, and it means no two shoulders are quite identical.

The point is protected

The tip of a pear is the thinnest part of the stone and the part that chips. Ours is covered by a full claw rather than left standing proud, which costs a fraction of the outline and saves the diamond.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. This ring was photographed in yellow gold, which suits the antique style of the shoulders, but every metal is made to order and priced above. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown. The shoulder diamonds are matched to the same E and VVS2 grade.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. Each shoulder stone gets its own seat cut at its own angle, and the baguettes have to run straight against curved neighbours without a gap. The point claw is fitted last, to the measured stone. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush, working between the shoulder stones and behind the pear. Check the point claw once a year, as you would on any pear. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity are the diamonds? The centre pear and every accent are E colour and VVS2 clarity, on all metals and all carat weights.

Does the carat weight include the shoulders? No. The 2, 3, 4 and 5 carat options refer to the centre pear. The shoulder diamonds are in addition and are scaled to suit it.

Is the certificate really free? Yes. The IGI report for the centre stone is included in the price on every variant.

Can I wear the point facing my wrist instead? Yes. Tell us when you order and we will set it that way round at no extra charge.

Will a wedding band sit flush? Not completely, since the shoulders rise where they meet the band. A shaped band follows the line properly, and we will make one to match if you ask.

Can it be resized? Yes, at the back where the band is plain. One or two sizes either way is straightforward.
