Design & Selection
We finalise your design and hand-pick the certified center stone.
Save 20%A pear cut laboratory grown diamond with a fine cluster of very small round diamonds worked around the head. The accents here are deliberately tiny, a little over a tenth of a carat in total, so they read as a glint at the edge of the stone rather than a second ring of diamonds competing with it.
There is a version of this ring with a fat halo of large accents that makes the head look enormous in a photograph. This is not that ring. The accents are small enough that from arm's length you read one pear shaped diamond, and only close up do you notice the fine line of light around it.
The reason to build it this way is that a pear has a distinctive silhouette, and a heavy halo blurs it. Keeping the accents small preserves the teardrop outline while still lifting the edge of the stone off the metal. If you want the shape of the diamond to be the thing people recognise, this is the setting that does it.
The tip of a pear is the thinnest part of the stone and the first place a knock will find. It sits in a V shaped claw that wraps the point from both sides and covers the very end, rather than a round claw that would leave it exposed. This is not optional on a pear. It is the difference between a stone that survives daily wear and one that comes back to us chipped.
A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a stone pulled out of the ground. The only difference is where it grew. Ours are produced by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature growth, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant of any kind. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.
Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. With accents this small the metal around them is a real part of what you see, so the colour choice changes the ring noticeably. White metal keeps the fine cluster almost invisible until it catches light. Yellow and rose gold outline each tiny stone and make the cluster read as a deliberate detail. 10K is the hardest of the gold alloys, 14K is the balance most people choose for daily wear, and 18K is the richest colour but the softest metal. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.
The centre diamond in this ring is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate travels with the ring at no extra charge. The report states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the laser inscription on the girdle, and it confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown. You are not asked to take our word for any of it. Every certificate is included free with every metal and every carat weight, and it is the same document an independent appraiser or an insurer will ask to see.
Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, the city where the majority of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. Nothing here is pulled off a shelf. When your order arrives we cut the seat for your centre stone, work the cluster around its outline, then file, set and polish it by hand for your carat weight and your finger size. Setting accents this small is slower than setting large ones, not faster, because the seats are cut under a microscope and there is no margin for a slip. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.
Warm water, a drop of mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush will keep it bright. Small accents sit in shallow seats and collect soap quickly, so a fortnightly brush matters more here than on a plain solitaire. Work around the edge of the head and underneath it. Rinse well and dry with a soft cloth. Take it off for the gym, for gardening and before swimming, and keep it away from bleach and chlorine, which attack the alloys in gold rather than the diamond itself.
What colour and clarity is the diamond? Every centre stone is E colour and VVS2 clarity, on every metal and every carat weight. The accents are matched to the same grade. The IGI report in the box states both grades for the centre.
Will the cluster make the stone look much bigger? No, and that is the point. The accents are small by design. If you want apparent size, a full halo will add roughly a carat's worth of visual spread instead.
Which way does the point face? Almost everyone wears a pear with the point towards the fingernail, which lengthens the finger. We will set it the other way if you prefer.
Will a wedding band sit flush? Close to it. The head is not especially raised, so a straight band sits near flat, and a curved band follows the point exactly.
Can the tiny accents fall out? It is uncommon when the beads are raised properly, which is a hand operation and the reason we do it in house rather than buying in cast heads.
Can it be resized? Yes. The shank below the cluster is plain, so it resizes without heat going near the set stones.
