The twist is structural

The band does not simply curve, it rotates. Leaving the bezel it turns through a quarter twist before it reaches the back of the finger, which is what lifts the pave into view from above instead of hiding it against the side of the hand. It also means the ring sits with a slight lean, following the direction of the stone.

A bezel around a pear

The tip of a pear is the part that chips. A full bezel wraps the whole outline, tip included, in a thin wall of metal, so nothing is exposed and nothing catches. Around a stone set sideways it also gives the ring a clean teardrop silhouette that claws would interrupt.

Set east west

Turned across the finger rather than along it, the pear spans the hand instead of pointing up it. It looks wider, sits lower and reads as modern rather than traditional, and it pairs naturally with a band that curves away underneath.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. This ring was photographed in yellow gold, which sets the bezel rim off against the stone, but every metal is made to order and priced above. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown. The pave diamonds are matched to the same E and VVS2 grade.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. The bezel is formed around the measured stone so the rim stays even at the tip, and the pave is set after the band is twisted, each seat cut at its own angle because the surface is turning under the stones. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush, following the pave around the twist on both sides and brushing beneath the bezel. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity is the diamond? Every centre stone is E colour and VVS2 clarity, on every metal and every carat weight. The pave is matched to the same grade.

Does the carat weight include the pave? No. The 2, 3, 4 and 5 carat options refer to the centre pear. The band diamonds are in addition.

Is the certificate really free? Yes. The IGI report is included in the price on every variant.

Is a bezel safer than claws for a pear? Yes, distinctly. The tip is the weak point, and a bezel covers it completely.

Will a wedding band sit flush? Not against a twisted band. We make a shaped band that follows the turn, so ask us if you would like the pair.

Can it be resized? Yes, at the back, where the pave stops. One or two sizes either way is straightforward.
