An oval cut lab grown diamond is set on the diagonal, and instead of meeting head on beneath it the band divides and sweeps past on either side. One arm rises over the top of the stone, the other slides underneath, and the two cross in a single unbroken curve. This is a bypass setting, and it is the reason this ring reads as movement rather than as an object mounted on a circle.

Because there are no prong claws standing up around the stone, the sweep of metal itself does the holding. The result is a very low profile, a lot of open space around the diamond and an outline that changes as the hand turns.

Band details

The shank is a plain polished band with no accent stones anywhere. As it approaches the head it flattens and twists, splitting into the two arms that pass the diamond. Every curve is filed and polished by hand, because a bypass only looks right if the two arms are perfectly balanced. The finished ring sits very close to the finger and has nothing that can snag.

Metal options

Choose from 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K and 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. Yellow gold makes the sweep of the band the most visible part of the design. Rose gold gives it a softer, more fluid look. White gold and sterling silver make the metal recede so the oval appears to hang in the air. Every metal is finished by hand in our workshop.

What is a bypass setting?
In a bypass ring the two ends of the band do not meet. They pass each other around the centre stone, one above and one below, so the shank forms an open spiral rather than a closed circle. It is one of the oldest ring forms and one of the most sculptural.

Is a bypass setting secure?
Yes. The stone is gripped by claws formed from the arms of the band, which are thicker and better anchored than free standing prongs. There is also less metal standing above the girdle, so there is less to catch and bend.

Why is the oval set at an angle?
Setting the stone on the diagonal follows the line of the sweep. It makes the ring look like a single continuous gesture and it flatters the finger, since the diagonal draws the eye lengthwise as well as across.

Is a lab grown diamond a real diamond?
Yes. A lab grown diamond has the same carbon crystal structure, hardness, refractive index and fire as a mined diamond. The only difference is that it was grown in a controlled environment rather than pulled from the ground.

Can I wear a wedding band with a bypass ring?
A straight band will sit against the lower arm with a slight angle. Many people prefer to wear this ring alone or with the band on the other hand. We can also make a curved band shaped to nest into the sweep.

Which metal is best for daily wear?
14K and 18K gold are the most durable choices for a ring worn every day. 10K is harder still. Sterling silver is softer and suits gentler wear or a first ring.
