Four claws or six

A four claw setting holds an oval at its sides and shows the most diamond. A six claw setting adds a claw at each end of the stone, so the tips of the oval, which are its most exposed edges, are covered. If one claw is ever knocked or worn, five are still holding the stone rather than three.

There is a look to it as well. Six claws frame the oval more evenly, so the outline of the stone reads a little rounder and softer against the finger. It is the classic choice for people who want an oval solitaire with a bit more reassurance and a bit more metal detail.

A fine band

The band is slim and plain on purpose. A thin shank makes the centre stone look larger by contrast, it stacks easily with a wedding band, and because nothing is set into it, it can be resized freely for the life of the ring. With an oval, which already spreads wider than a round of the same weight, the effect is a stone that looks generous on a delicate ring.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. On a fine band with six claws, the metal is visible as a delicate frame. Yellow gold gives the warm, classic solitaire look, white metal almost disappears around the stone, and rose gold softens it. 10K is the hardest alloy, 14K is the everyday balance, and 18K is the richest colour but the softest metal. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown. It is included free with every metal and every carat weight.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. Each claw is positioned for the exact outline of your centre stone, then the stone is set and the ring is finished by hand for your carat weight and finger size. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush will keep it bright. Brush underneath the stone, where soap collects and dulls the light coming back through the pavilion. Check the claws once or twice a year, as with any claw set ring. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity is the diamond? Every centre stone is E colour and VVS2 clarity, on every metal and every carat weight. The IGI report in the box states both grades.

Do six claws hide more of the stone? Marginally. Each claw is small, and the extra two sit at the tips, so face up the difference is slight.

Is six claws more secure than four? Yes. The ends of the oval are covered, and the stone stays held even if one claw is damaged.

Will a wedding band sit flush? Yes. The band is plain and the head sits cleanly above it.

Can it be resized? Yes, freely. There is nothing set into the band.
