Side clusters, not a halo

A halo runs all the way around a stone. Side clusters sit only at the two flanks. That difference changes the shape of the ring on the hand: a halo makes an oval look rounder and larger, while side clusters make it look longer and wider at the same time, like a centre stone with two small bouquets beside it.

The accents here total around a sixth of a carat, enough for each cluster to read clearly as a group of stones rather than a single sparkle. It is a more romantic, less symmetrical look than a halo, and it suits people who find a full halo too formal.

The oval

An oval is a brilliant cut stretched along one axis. It faces up around ten percent larger than a round of the same weight and lengthens the finger. With side clusters leaving its tips uncovered, that length is exactly what you see.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. Yellow gold gives the clusters a vintage warmth, white metal makes them read as pure light, and rose gold softens the look. 10K is the hardest alloy, 14K is the everyday balance, and 18K is the richest colour but the softest metal. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. Each side cluster is laid out by hand to sit tight against the oval at your chosen carat weight, then set and polished. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush. Work the brush into both clusters and underneath the head. Rinse and dry with a soft cloth, and take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity is the diamond? Every centre stone is E colour and VVS2 clarity, on every metal and every carat weight. The cluster stones are matched to the same grade.

How is this different from a halo ring? A halo surrounds the stone. Side clusters sit only at the flanks, so the oval keeps its length and the ring looks wider rather than rounder.

Will a wedding band sit flush? A straight band will meet the clusters. A curved or notched band fits more closely.

Can the small stones fall out? It is uncommon when seats are cut properly by hand, which is why we do it in house.

Can it be resized? Yes. The lower shank is plain.
