What a hidden halo adds to an oval

A standard halo sits beside the stone and makes it look bigger from above. A hidden halo sits below the girdle, facing outward, and leaves the face of the ring untouched. On an oval that matters, because the clean elongated outline of the stone is the reason most people choose the shape. A hidden halo keeps that outline pure while adding sparkle in profile.

The oval's rounded ends also let the hidden halo run as one smooth curve under the stone, with no corners to break the line. It is one of the neatest pairings of shape and setting there is.

The oval itself

An oval is a brilliant cut stretched along one axis. It faces up around ten percent larger than a round of the same weight and lengthens the look of the finger. Its sparkle is fine and lively, and a well cut oval shows little or none of the dark bow tie band across its middle that poorly cut ovals display. We reject stones with a pronounced one.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. The hidden halo sits in partial shadow against the collar, so warm gold behind it makes it glow while white metal gives a crisper line. 10K is the hardest alloy, 14K is the everyday balance, and 18K is the richest colour but the softest metal. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown. It is included free with every metal and every carat weight.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. The collar is built to the girdle of your oval, the hidden halo is set into it, and only then is the centre stone seated, because afterwards there is no access to those small stones. The ring is finished by hand for your carat weight and finger size. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush will keep it bright. Work the brush around the collar from underneath, where the hidden halo faces the gap that collects soap and hand cream. Rinse and dry with a soft cloth, and take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity is the diamond? Every centre stone is E colour and VVS2 clarity, on every metal and every carat weight. The hidden halo stones are matched to the same grade.

Will the hidden halo make the oval look larger? No. It changes the side view. From above you see the oval alone.

Does it sit higher than a plain solitaire? Slightly, because the collar needs depth to hold a row of stones.

Will a wedding band sit flush? Yes. Nothing projects sideways at band level, so a straight band sits close.

Can it be resized? Yes. The shank is plain.
