An oval laboratory grown diamond framed by a fine pave halo, on a band made of a chain of little marquise shaped links, each one edged in milgrain and set with a small diamond. The band looks like a string of leaves or seeds running round the finger, and it is what makes this ring instantly recognisable.

The marquise motif band

Rather than a straight line of pave, the band is shaped into a series of pointed oval links, each outlined in milgrain with a single diamond at its centre. It is a detail borrowed from Edwardian jewellery, where bands were often pierced and shaped into garlands. On the hand it gives a delicate, open, lacy look, and it is lighter and more comfortable than a solid band.

How it differs from our other oval halos

Our other oval halo rings use plain, pave or milgrain bands. This one is defined by its marquise link band, which is the most decorative and romantic of them.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. Rose and yellow gold emphasise the vintage garland look; white gold makes it crisp and lacy. 10K is the hardest alloy, 14K is the everyday balance, and 18K is the richest colour but the softest metal. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. Each marquise link is shaped and milgrained by hand, and every diamond is set under a microscope. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush. Brush gently through the open links of the band. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity is the diamond? Every centre stone is E colour and VVS2 clarity, on every metal and every carat weight. The halo and band diamonds are matched to the same grade.

Is this a genuine antique? No. It is newly made to order in a vintage inspired style.

Is the shaped band comfortable? Yes. The links are smooth on the inside and the band sits flat on the finger.

Can it be resized? Only slightly, because the band is shaped all the way round. Please check your size before ordering.

Will a wedding band sit flush? A slim band or a matching marquise motif band pairs best.
