Why a bezel

Claws hold a stone at four points. A bezel holds it all the way round. That makes it the most protective setting there is: the girdle of the diamond, which is its thinnest edge, is covered completely, so a knock against a counter or a door frame lands on metal rather than stone. Nothing snags on knitwear, hair or gloves, because there is nothing sticking up to snag.

A bezel also changes the look. The rim of metal becomes a frame, so the oval reads as a single smooth shape rather than a stone perched on prongs. It is modern and architectural, and it pairs naturally with plain wedding bands.

Why the oval suits it

An oval has no points and no corners, so a bezel can follow its outline as one unbroken curve. That is harder to achieve on a pear or a marquise, where the rim has to turn sharply. On an oval the result is soft and even. The oval also spreads wider than a round of the same weight, around ten percent more face up area, so a bezel oval still reads as a generous stone despite the metal around it.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. A bezel shows more metal than a claw setting, so the colour choice matters more here. White metal makes the rim disappear into the stone, while yellow and rose gold draw a warm outline around a cool white diamond. 10K is the hardest alloy, 14K is the everyday balance, and 18K is the richest colour but the softest metal. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown. It is included free with every metal and every carat weight.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. A bezel is shaped to the exact outline of one particular stone, so we build it after you order, rub the rim over the girdle by hand, and polish the ring for your carat weight and finger size. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush will keep it bright. Run the brush around the rim where metal meets diamond, and underneath where soap collects. Rinse and dry with a soft cloth, and take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity is the diamond? Every centre stone is E colour and VVS2 clarity, on every metal and every carat weight. The IGI report in the box states both grades.

Does a bezel reduce sparkle? A little light enters through the sides of a claw set stone that a bezel blocks. On an oval, which gets most of its brilliance through the table, the difference is small.

Is it good for an active life? It is the most hard wearing setting we make. Nothing can bend, lift or catch.

Will a wedding band sit flush? Yes. There are no claws in the way.

Can it be resized? Yes, freely. The band is plain.
