Why the sides are angled

Set upright, two pears either side of a marquise would make a rigid line. Tilted outward, with their points turned away from the centre, they open the head into a fan. The ring gains width across the finger, the three stones stop looking like a row, and the eye travels outward from the centre rather than along it.

Three tapered shapes

Marquise and pear are close relatives: both taper to a point, both are cut as brilliants, both carry their weight in spread rather than depth. Using them together means all three stones catch light the same way and at the same speed, which is why the head reads as one object rather than as a centre stone with attachments.

Every point is guarded

The centre marquise has two tips and each pear has one, so there are four vulnerable points on this ring. Every one of them sits inside a v claw that wraps around the edges either side of the point rather than pressing down on it.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. Yellow and rose gold are photographed here, and with only three stones the metal is a large part of what you see, so the colour matters more than on a pave design. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown. Both pear side stones are matched to the same E and VVS2 grade, which is essential when there are only three stones for the eye to compare.

About the bow tie

Marquise and pear cuts both have the potential for a bow tie, a dark band across the middle caused by the proportions of the cut rather than by colour or clarity. No certificate grades it. We check all three stones by eye and reject any that show it.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. The two pears are matched to each other as well as to the centre, and the angle they sit at is set by eye against your individual marquise. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush. Brush underneath the head where the three stones meet, and check the four v claws now and then. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity is the diamond? Every centre stone is E colour and VVS2 clarity, on every metal and every carat weight. Both pear side stones are matched to the same grade.

Does the carat weight include the side stones? No. The 2, 3, 4 and 5 carat options refer to the centre marquise. The two pears are in addition and are scaled to suit it.

Is the certificate really free? Yes. The IGI report for the centre stone is included in the price on every variant.

Will a wedding band sit flush against it? The angled pears reach down over the shoulders, so a straight band leaves a gap. A contoured band follows the fan properly, and this ring also wears well on its own.

Can it be resized? Yes. The shank is plain metal, so one or two sizes either way is straightforward.
