Why trillions beside an emerald cut

A trillion is a triangle. Set with one flat edge against the flank of the emerald cut, it meets the centre stone along a straight line with no gap and no wasted metal, which a round or a pear can never do. The outward point then carries the eye along the finger and gives the cluster length. It is the side stone shape that respects a step cut instead of fighting it.

Brilliant points against a still centre

Trillions are brilliant faceted, so they flicker. The emerald cut is step cut and gives long calm flashes through its wide open table. That difference in behaviour is deliberate. The busy triangles make the still rectangle in the middle look larger and more composed than it would between matching step cuts.

Why clarity matters most here

An emerald cut hides almost nothing. Its facets are long, parallel and wide open, so any inclusion or cloud would sit in plain view. Every centre stone here is VVS2, a grade at which nothing is visible even under ten times magnification, and the trillions are matched to the same standard.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. Yellow gold is photographed here and warms an otherwise severe arrangement. White gold and silver keep all three stones reading as cold and white as they are. 10K is the hardest alloy, 14K is the everyday balance, and 18K is the richest colour but the softest metal. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. Trillions have to be cut to the exact height of the individual emerald cut so all three tables sit level, which is why the sides are made for your centre stone rather than picked from a tray. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush. Work the brush along the two straight seams where the trillions meet the centre. Wipe the table of the emerald cut, which shows fingerprints more than a brilliant. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

What colour and clarity is the diamond? Every centre stone is E colour and VVS2 clarity, on every metal and every carat weight. The trillion side stones are matched to the same grade.

Are the trillion points fragile? The three corners are the thinnest part of any triangular cut, which is why each one sits inside its own claw rather than being left exposed.

Is the certificate really free? Yes. The IGI report for the centre stone is included in the price on every variant.

Will a wedding band sit flush against it? Yes. The trillions step down towards the shank, so a straight band meets the ring cleanly on both sides.

Can it be resized? Yes. All three stones sit in the head and the band carries none, so it is a simple resize.
