Three step cuts in a line

Repeating the same cut at three sizes gives the ring a strict geometry: the long facets of all three stones run in the same direction and flash together as the hand moves. It is the most formal arrangement in engagement rings, and the reason this design reads as architectural rather than romantic.

Why matching is difficult

Side stones cut to a different ratio than the centre look wrong immediately, because a step cut has nothing to disguise it. Ours are cut to proportions that follow the centre stone, so the three read as one family rather than as a large stone flanked by whatever was available.

Why the grade matters here

Step cuts have large open tables and a clear view straight into the stone. Three of them side by side make any difference in colour or clarity obvious, which is why all three are E colour and VVS2, matched as a set.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. This ring was photographed in yellow gold, but every metal is made to order and priced above. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown. Both side stones are matched to the same E and VVS2 grade.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. The three stones are set together so the tables finish level and the long edges stay parallel, which is the whole difficulty of a step cut three stone ring. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

About the photographs

Some photographs show this ring with stacking bands or worn alongside another ring. Those pieces are separate and are not included. The ring box shown is our standard packaging and comes with every order.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush, brushing behind all three stones. Large open tables show dust faster than brilliants do, so clean this ring weekly. Step cuts have open corners, so avoid knocking it against hard edges. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity are the diamonds? All three stones are E colour and VVS2 clarity, on every metal and every carat weight.

Does the carat weight include the side stones? No. The 2, 3, 4 and 5 carat options refer to the centre emerald cut. The two side stones are in addition and are scaled to suit it.

Is the certificate really free? Yes. The IGI report for the centre stone is included in the price on every variant.

Will a wedding band sit flush? Yes. The band is plain and the stones sit above it, so a straight band meets it cleanly on either side.

Can it be resized? Yes, at the back. One or two sizes either way is straightforward.

Can I have tapered baguettes instead? Yes, we make that version too, and it gives a more art deco line. Tell us when you order.
