Straight lines inside a curve

An emerald cut is nothing but parallel lines and cropped corners. A swirl is nothing but curve. Setting the one inside the other, and tilting the stone off the axis of the band, is what makes this ring look considered rather than merely decorative. The rectangle reads as an object placed in the metal, not as a stone the metal was built around.

The accents match the centre

Rather than dropping round brilliants into the gaps, the two accents are step cut as well, so all three stones flash in the same broad planes instead of one sparkling while the others glow. They sit in the hollows where the swirl changes direction, which is the only place on this design where a stone can go without interrupting the line.

Why the grade is fixed at E and VVS2

Step cuts have large open tables and long unbroken facets that hide nothing, and this ring has three of them sitting together. Any difference in colour between the centre and the accents would be obvious by direct comparison. Every stone is E colour and VVS2 clarity, matched before setting.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. Yellow gold is photographed here, and on a design where the polished sweep of metal is half the ring, the alloy matters: 10K holds a polish hardest, 14K is the everyday balance, 18K gives the deepest colour. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown. The step cut accents are matched to the same E and VVS2 grade.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. The swirl is formed and polished before any stone goes near it, because a curve like this cannot be corrected afterwards, and the diagonal angle of the centre stone is set to your particular emerald cut so the corners clear the metal on both sides. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush. Work into the hollows where the accents sit and along the inside of the curve behind the centre stone. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity is the diamond? Every centre stone is E colour and VVS2 clarity, on every metal and every carat weight. The accents are matched to the same grade.

Does the carat weight include the accents? No. The 2, 3, 4 and 5 carat options refer to the centre emerald cut. The two step cut accents are in addition.

Is the certificate really free? Yes. The IGI report for the centre stone is included in the price on every variant.

Will a wedding band sit flush against it? No, not flat. The swirl crosses the band at an angle. A curved or open band nests against it, or wear this ring alone.

Can it be resized? Only slightly, because the curve is formed to a specific finger size. Please measure carefully and we will build to your size.

Do emerald cuts sparkle? They flash rather than sparkle, returning light in wide mirror like planes. With three step cuts on one ring the effect is a set of slow, bright pulses as the hand moves, rather than continuous glitter.
