The stepped bezel

A plain bezel is a single flat wall of metal. This one is cut back in two levels, so the frame steps down from the table of the stone to the band. It repeats, in gold, exactly what the emerald cut is doing in diamond, which is why the ring reads as one continuous idea rather than a stone dropped into a setting.

Flush set, not raised

The baguettes are tapped down into their own seats so their tables sit level with the surface of the shank. Nothing protrudes. This is the most snag proof way to set a stone, and it is why this ring suits people who work with their hands, wear gloves, or simply do not want to think about their ring during the day.

Why clarity matters most here

Every stone on this ring is step cut. Long parallel facets and wide open tables mean nothing is hidden, so any inclusion would sit in plain view. Every centre diamond here is VVS2, a grade at which nothing is visible even under ten times magnification, and the baguettes are matched to it.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. Yellow gold, as photographed, gives the stepped frame real presence against a colourless stone. 10K is the hardest alloy, 14K is the everyday balance, and 18K is the richest colour but the softest metal. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. Cutting a clean second step into a bezel wall without thinning it is precise work, and flush setting a tapered baguette so the top sits dead level takes a steady hand. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush. Run the brush along the step of the bezel and around each flush set baguette. Wipe the table of the emerald cut, which shows fingerprints more than a brilliant. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

What colour and clarity is the diamond? Every centre stone is E colour and VVS2 clarity, on every metal and every carat weight. The baguettes are matched to the same grade.

How does this differ from your other bezel set emerald cut ring? That one has a plain single wall bezel and its baguettes sit against the setting. This one has a two level stepped frame and the baguettes are flush set into the band itself, so it sits noticeably flatter on the finger.

Is the certificate really free? Yes. The IGI report for the centre stone is included in the price on every variant.

Will a wedding band sit flush against it? Yes, as well as any ring we make. Nothing on it stands above band height.

Can it be resized? Yes. The shank is plain past the flush set baguettes.
