Set low on purpose

Most engagement rings lift the stone clear of the hand. This one sits it down close, so the table of the emerald cut is barely above the line of the pave. A low setting is steadier on the finger, slides under gloves and cuffs without catching, and puts the whole ring on one plane, which is what lets the pave and the centre stone read as a single object instead of a stone on top of a band.

The full pave band

The round accents run the entire circumference, including the back of the finger, which makes this an eternity band with a centre stone rather than a solitaire with paved shoulders. The consequence worth knowing: an eternity band cannot be resized in the usual way, because there is no plain metal to cut into. We make it to your size instead.

Double claws

Each corner of the emerald cut is held by two narrower claws rather than one wide one. They grip the cut corners at two points each, which is more secure on a step cut, and being slimmer they cover less of the stone, so the rectangle stays crisp at the corners.

Why the grade is fixed at E and VVS2

An emerald cut has a large open table and long unbroken facets, and it shows colour and inclusions far more readily than any brilliant. On a low set ring, the stone sits right up against the pave, where any difference in colour would be obvious. That is why we do not offer a range here. Every centre stone is E colour and VVS2 clarity, and every accent is matched to it.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. Yellow gold is photographed here, and the warm beads of metal between the pave stones are a large part of why this version looks the way it does. 10K is the hardest alloy, which suits a fully paved band, 14K is the everyday balance and 18K gives the deepest colour. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown. The pave diamonds are matched to the same E and VVS2 grade.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. A full eternity band is set stone by stone the whole way round, each in its own pair of beads, with the spacing held even so the last stone meets the first cleanly. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush. Work all the way round both edges of the band, including underneath, since a full eternity ring collects on the palm side where you never look. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity is the diamond? Every centre stone is E colour and VVS2 clarity, on every metal and every carat weight. The pave is matched to the same grade.

Does the carat weight include the pave? No. The 2, 3, 4 and 5 carat options refer to the centre emerald cut stone. The pave around the band is in addition.

Is the certificate really free? Yes. The IGI report for the centre stone is included in the price on every variant.

Can it be resized? No, not in the normal way. The pave runs the full circumference, so there is no plain metal to work with. Please measure carefully and we will build it to your size.

Will a wedding band sit flush against it? Yes, and unusually well, because the stone is set low and the band is straight. A matching pave or plain band sits flat on either side.

Do stones on the underside wear down? The stones themselves do not, but the beads holding them see more contact than on a half pave ring. We recommend a setting check every couple of years, which is standard for any full eternity band.
