Held along the edges, not at the corners

Claws grip four small points. These walls hold the full length of both long sides, which spreads the pressure, covers nothing of the table, and repeats the straight lines of the step cut instead of interrupting them. On a rectangular stone it is both the cleaner and the stronger solution.

Set east west

Turned across the finger rather than along it, the emerald cut spans the hand and sits low. It looks wider, it does not catch on a sleeve, and it reads as quietly modern rather than formal. The same stone set upright is a completely different ring.

Why the grade matters on this shape

A step cut is rows of long parallel facets, a large open table and a clear view straight into the stone. There is no brilliant faceting to hide behind, which is why we set only E colour, VVS2 diamonds here. At a lower grade you would see it without a loupe.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. This ring was photographed in yellow gold, where the walls read strongly against the stone. In white metal they recede and the diamond appears to float. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown. With no accents anywhere, that report describes the whole ring.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. The two walls are cut and fitted to the measured stone so it sits square between them with no gap at either end, and the band is polished as one continuous surface. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

About the photographs

Some photographs show this ring with stacking bands or worn alongside other rings. Those pieces are separate and are not included. The ring box shown is our standard packaging and comes with every order.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush, brushing under the stone between the two walls. An open table shows dust faster than a brilliant does, so clean this one weekly. An emerald cut has open corners, so avoid knocking it against hard edges. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

What colour and clarity is the diamond? Every centre stone is E colour and VVS2 clarity, on every metal and every carat weight.

Is a bar setting secure? Yes, and on a rectangular stone more secure than corner claws, because the metal runs the full length of two edges rather than gripping four points.

Is the certificate really free? Yes. The IGI report is included in the price on every variant.

Will a wedding band sit flush? Yes. The band is plain and round and the stone sits above it, so a straight band meets it cleanly.

Can it be resized? Yes, at the back. One or two sizes either way is straightforward.
