An elongated cushion cut lab grown diamond held in a trellis setting on a plain slim band. From above this looks like a simple four claw solitaire. The interest is entirely underneath. In a trellis setting the claws do not rise straight from a basket, they sweep up from the shank and cross over one another beneath the stone in a woven pattern, so the gallery becomes an open lattice of interlacing metal rather than a plain cage. It is the part of the ring only the wearer usually sees, and it is the reason this setting has been used for over a century on stones where the maker wanted the underside to be as considered as the top. The trellis is pure metalwork, so it reads most clearly in yellow or rose gold where the crossing arms show as distinct woven lines. White gold makes the whole setting recede beneath the stone. For daily wear 14K is harder than 18K and keeps crossing claw arms rigid.

Frequently asked questions

What is a trellis setting?
A setting in which the claws sweep up from the shank and cross over one another under the stone, forming a woven lattice instead of a plain basket. It is a structural detail visible mainly from beneath and from the side.

Does a trellis hold more securely?
It holds at least as well as a basket. The crossing arms brace against each other, which adds rigidity, and it also lets the stone sit slightly lower than a raised basket would.

Why does it matter if it is only visible underneath?
Because you see it every time you take the ring off, and it is the traditional mark of a ring finished properly rather than only where it shows. Many people choose a trellis specifically for that reason.
