The elongated cushion

A standard cushion is close to square. An elongated cushion is cut longer than it is wide, typically with a length to width ratio around 1.2 to 1.4, while keeping the rounded corners and big, soft facets of the classic cushion. On the finger it sits between an oval and a radiant: rounder and softer than a radiant, more structured than an oval.

The shape has become one of the most requested in recent years precisely because it is a compromise that works. It lengthens the finger, it faces up larger than a square cushion of the same weight, and it keeps the warm, candlelit sparkle that cushions are known for.

Pave shoulders

Small round diamonds are set along both shoulders in beads raised by hand from the metal. The pave adds fine sparkle beside the broader flashes of the cushion, and it makes the band look slimmer than a plain shank of the same width. The run stops partway down, leaving a plain lower band that can be resized freely.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. The soft light of a cushion suits yellow gold especially well, giving a vintage warmth, while white metal makes the pave and stone read as one continuous line of light. Rose gold sits between. 10K is the hardest alloy, 14K is the everyday balance, and 18K is the richest colour but the softest metal. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown. It is included free with every metal and every carat weight.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. We cut the seat for your centre stone, set the pave by hand and finish the ring for your carat weight and finger size. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush will keep it bright. A cushion is a deep stone, so grease underneath dulls it quickly. Brush under the head and along the pave shoulders, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity is the diamond? Every centre stone is E colour and VVS2 clarity, on every metal and every carat weight. The pave diamonds are matched to the same grade.

How is an elongated cushion different from a radiant? A radiant has cropped straight corners and a sharper, more faceted sparkle. An elongated cushion has rounded corners and softer, broader flashes.

Does it look bigger than a square cushion? Yes. Spread along its length, it faces up larger than a square cushion of the same carat weight.

Will a wedding band sit flush? Yes. The head is raised above tapering shoulders, so a straight band sits close.

Can it be resized? Yes. The lower band is plain.
