That is exactly what a shared prong setting is designed to achieve. In an ordinary claw setting each stone needs four prongs of its own, which means four pieces of metal per stone and a visible gap of gold between one seat and the next. In a shared prong row each prong does double duty, holding the edge of one stone and the edge of its neighbour at the same time, so a row of six accents needs seven prongs instead of twenty four. Far less metal appears on the surface and the stones sit almost edge to edge. The trade off is that the stones must be calibrated to within a very small tolerance, because a shared prong cannot be adjusted for one stone without moving its neighbour: if a single accent is a fraction undersized the whole row goes crooked.
