Scattered, not symmetrical

Pave runs in straight lines and matched sizes. Here the accents are deliberately irregular: small marquises angled outward like leaves, rounds filling the spaces between them, the whole arrangement tapering away towards the back of the ring. It takes far longer to set, because every stone needs its own seat cut at its own angle, and it is what makes the ring look like a piece of nature rather than a piece of engineering.

Why marquise accents

A small marquise has a direction. Set at an angle it points away from the centre stone and draws the eye outward along the shoulder, which a round accent cannot do. Mixing the two gives the shoulders both movement and fill.

The centre stone

An elongated cushion, cut long rather than square, with softened corners and large facets that flash broadly as the hand moves. Its calm outline is what keeps the busy shoulders from taking over.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. This ring was photographed in yellow gold, but every metal is made to order and priced above. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown. Every accent is matched to the same E and VVS2 grade.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. Each shoulder is laid out stone by stone against the measured centre, since the arrangement depends on how wide the cushion is, and the two sides are made to balance without being mirror images. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

About the photographs

One photograph shows this ring with several plain and set stacking bands. Those bands are separate pieces and are not included. The ring box shown is our standard packaging and comes with every order.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush, working the brush between the scattered accents from underneath. An irregular setting holds more hand cream than a flat one, so clean it a little more often. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity are the diamonds? The centre cushion and every accent are E colour and VVS2 clarity, on all metals and all carat weights.

Does the carat weight include the accents? No. The 2, 3, 4 and 5 carat options refer to the centre cushion. The scattered accents are in addition.

Is the certificate really free? Yes. The IGI report for the centre stone is included in the price on every variant.

Are both shoulders identical? Deliberately not. They are balanced in weight and spread but not mirrored, which is what keeps the arrangement looking natural.

Will a wedding band sit flush? Not completely, since accents run down towards the band. A shaped or contoured band follows the line, and we will make one to match if you ask.

Can it be resized? Yes, at the back where the band is plain. One or two sizes either way is straightforward.
